Meet Tim Glover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Glover.

Tim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I dropped out of college and started making films on a whim with some neighborhood friends and I fell in love since then. I started off mainly doing mock trailers for film ideas I had, so me and friends would shoot like 3-4 scenes and I’d edit that into a 1-2min trailer. Before long, that snowballed into making short films. I made one short that ended up being featured at the Atlanta Sci-Fi Film Festival in 2016, and IMAX was a sponsor. I won a cash prize, had my film play at Atlantic Station, and an all-expense-paid trip to LA to meet with the CEOs of IMAX. They were great and I made a good relationship with one of them and that eventually led to me landing a job at the VFX dept of Avengers: Endgame. After that, the snowball kept rolling and I recently wrapped up working on The Suicide Squad. VFX is my work and also love, but writing/directing will always be my true passion.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has gotten smoother, but I’m still not where I want to be. Even now, it’s difficult for me to accept compliments and praise because I feel like there’s still so much in terms of storytelling and filmmaking that I want to do and haven’t yet. A major struggle was the first part of the journey. For about 5-6 years up until I won that award, I had no idea if what I was doing with my life was the right thing to do. I was always working a retail job and felt depressed, but winning the award was a shining light. Even getting to work on some of the biggest films of all time, I’m always aware of my journey in retrospect and there is an incredible amount of pride in the fact that I made my own path and didn’t follow any rules/plans/guidelines. Anyone can make their own path from nothing.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
So I’m mainly a freelance artist. I work specifically on my own films and ideas but up to collaborate if someone has a story that interests me. I’d say I specialize in trying to tell great stories with rich characters and arcs. Independent film has had a great influx in the past few years and it’s proving they can do some things big-budget films can’t. Tell stories without handholding to an audience. What sets me apart is no matter what; I’m always challenging the ideas presented upon me in a constructive way.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great place for the film. There is still, in my opinion, is an untapped independent market here. A lot of the big-budget films come here and head back to LA for a post, but I often wonder why can’t there be more post houses here? Atlanta is a city in the jungle. In this city, there are so many different locations for relatively cheap for free. That’s great pro for me, I’ve often just picked my camera up and gone out and shot at places. There are times where I’ve gotten permission to film in shops and haven’t had to pay anything. There are also times when I haven’t asked anyone for permission and just gone out and shot guerilla style. Those were some of the funner ones.
