Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Augustine.
Traci, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Traci Augustine. I am an R&B and pop recording artist and songwriter. I was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky but raised in Clarksville, Tennessee. Being a singer has always been my interest. When I was younger, I was in multiple talent shows, was in my school’s choir, and sang as a soloist at church. I grew up watching and listening to artists like T-Pain, R Kelly, and Bobby Brown. They all were a big influence on me wanting to be an artist growing up. I was active in Atlanta, Georgia for about a year and I officially moved to the Buckhead area recently for better access to better resources.
What really pushed my career the most was the death of my high school friend, J, that meant the world to me. After high school, we decided to pursue music together. We weren’t blood, but that was my brother. J always knew how to brighten up a mood. He was the life of the party and he always brought out the best in anyone. There was never a dry moment with both of us. J was very talented but he was insecure about his craft. He would always get scared and want to give up on music because he had fears of his music career failing. He then turned and decided to go into the Air Force. Years later, he got an honorable discharge from the Air Force. Shortly after, he fell sickly and passed away. My drive for pursuing music faded away and I decide to give up my music career as an R&B artist.
The thing that made me start back doing music was a dream that I had one night. It was so realistic. J came to me and asked me why did I give up music and he said that he wanted me to continue my career and ever since then, I have been rising to stardom. I started getting heavily active of multiple different social media platforms. Networking with others and marketing my music. I continued to hit different stages, performing at different venues, and even a few festivals. I have been featured on blogs such as The Source, HipHopWeekly, Respect Magazine, UrbanBuzz, and more. I currently have a following of 44.6k on Instagram. My name is @traciaugustine for those who would like to follow me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Making sure that I am on the right path has been an obstacle. You have to make the right connections and do business with the correct people. This is an eat or be eaten world. People are not going to have your best interest at heart because people are worried about surviving this world themselves. There are many scammers. Everyone says that they can help you build your brand, everyone can help you get in touch an A&R or label; everyone promises money in giveaways or live music reviews. Many of these people fill the artist with false hope.
It pays to educate yourself and learn the business, also deep research before working with people. For example, at the beginning of my career. I was contacted by a top music industry producer. My Instagram was buzzing and I had a very decent amount of followers. I believed that he wanted to work and I was interested in buying a beat. He was also going to co-produce the records with me. He was legit. We spoke over Facetime and everything. We got the contact done and I wired him over a thousand dollars. He stopped replying to my messages and had me on the block. Had I done the research, there was a RipOffReport about him. He has scammed many. Always do research on everything and everyone.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My business is So Groovy Ent. It is a record label based out of Atlanta, Georgia.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as the amount of life that I can impact positively. Everyone wants millions of followers and millions of dollars but if I can successfully impact someone’s life, I made it. The whole purpose of me being an R&B and pop artist is to be able to influence the lives of others. I want to be able to talk for people. I want to be able to help them say what they feel; they can talk through me.
