Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea Geddes.
Brea, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been familiar with marketing and how it benefits small businesses. Growing up, I had a lot of entrepreneurs in my family who leveraged physical marketing material to promote their businesses. In high school, I started my very first business as a freelance makeup artist. I was able to build a clientele through social media marketing and word of mouth from my friends at school. This was my first taste of being a business owner and I knew that owning my own business was may passion.
In college, I was able to expand my marketing capabilities. I had one of the best opportunities to work with Red Bull as a Brand Ambassador. This opportunity taught me so much about myself and others. I learned valuable lessons about innovation, the importance of adaptability, and that believing in myself and venturing outside of comfort zone is the only way to succeed. After graduation, I decided to pursue freelance digital marketing for small businesses. I explored several avenues in the marketing space before finding my niche. Niching down allowed me to purposely provide services to those who had great businesses but struggled to leverage social media and digital marketing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2019, Be Social Co. had a totally different name and menu for services. It was a rocky business launch but a lesson learned. It was something that I did not expect. I thought that I was pairing my education with my passion and that the only option was to succeed. I was sadly mistaken. I took time off to reflect and come up with a new business plan. Something more structured, fun, and representative of Black culture. I understand why I failed and that helps me ultimately help my clients not to make the same mistakes I made.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Be Social Co – what should we know?
Be Social Co. is a creative marketing agency dedicated to helping small businesses leverage social media by providing content that supports their business personality and speaks directly to their audience. It’s no longer enough to just talk about pain points. People want to feel seen and heard through your brand and Be Social helps businesses move beyond just selling a product. A lot of small businesses fail to pivot and give up after their first content plan fails. Content strategies are living documents that are meant to be reviewed and updated as necessary. Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
As a social strategist, it’s so important to be nimble. Marketing is very iterative and changing every single day. Staying on top of industry trends makes for being the best marketer. Being organized is also very important. Marketing takes a lot of research and keeping track of everything will ease frustrations and give success. I also am determined. Determination is key in social media marketing. Until a steady following is built, engagement might be inconsistent but you have to keep the long game in mind. The grit and determination is what gets you to your goal.
