Today we’d like to introduce you to Everett Johnson.
Everett, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After college, I worked at a local Nordstroms in Norfolk, VA and one day my manager asked me, “Why are you here?”. I didn’t know what she meant by saying that. She then stated that I was outshining and deserved a better opportunity. Two weeks later, with only $300 in my pocket, I packed my bags moved to Atlanta. I stayed on my frat brother warrens couch as I tried to find my way. Warrens an actor and got me gigs to be a background actor for several roles, including a role in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ That led me to find what I truly wanted to do, and that was tv costumer. After talking to the customer on that set, I was introduced to another customer in the business named Aaliyah. I met her on the set of “Lauren Lakes Paternity Court. I told her that if she ever needed help, I’m willing to be that person for her. I gave her my number and prayed on it because I didn’t have any professional experience but the intern I was currently doing, I didn’t think my chance would come anytime soon.
A week later, my phone rang at 4 AM and it was Aaliyah!! She asked if I was still interested in helping because her assistant couldn’t come in. I immediately got up, drove to the set, and went to work. Once I got there she said, “I don’t have time to train you so if this what you do, do It” I stated to her, “I got you.” People were continually asking who did this look, and who did that look, and I was acknowledged for it. With no experience, I performed so well that day that I was hired the next day. Since then, I’ve been on Emmy winning teams, costumed music videos for major artists, and worked on some of the most popular shows on television.
Has it been a smooth road?
The obstacles I faced were working on a gig then trying to find another gig with not knowing many people in the industry yet. So I would perform background gigs just so I could meet more tv costumes just to ask for chances to work on other productions.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company is an Upscale Urban Streetwear brand titled S3KTION8. The name came from my upbringing and remembering my past but using it to uplift others and change the meaning of the word. I created custom streetwear but with a high-end designer feel. My brand standouts from most because of my signature mark with are “Screws and Bolts” Screws and Bolts came from me thinking of something that could hold together the rebuilding of my foundation I built. My brand alone is my most proudest moment because it gives me the opportunity to grow and rebrand my image along the way as I grow as a person.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see my brand being nationwide because my mind will continue to grow as well as my audience.
