Today we’d like to introduce you to Mo.et.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m from North Augusta, South Carolina. I grew up singing in the church choir but never thought about pursuing music. My first time recording and attempting to make beats was 2016 after meeting my producer/engineer Vahnii. I also started learning piano in 2017 as a way to improve my production. I didn’t drop my first project until 2019 and I titled that Weightless due to it feeling like a weight was lifted off of me. My most recent project is Retro Mo and both are on all streaming platforms.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t say smooth at all. In these past few years, I’ve gone through the typical struggles of an indie artist from self-doubt, frustration, and lack of resources. I’ve struggled with the balance of time and energy. I’ve also lost a few of my friends, some that I made music with, tragically and that has had a big impact on me. But looking back on where I began, I understand that all of my downs are preparing for my ups.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
If I could describe what my music is, I’d choose the words cool and eccentric. I was inspired by music from the 70s to the 00s for Retro Mo and tend to merge styles together, which is why no song really sounds like another. My biggest influences are artists who refuse to be stuck in a box and are always looking to experiment while tapping into different genres. That’s what I aspire to convey while also staying within myself in the process.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Phade, which consists of Raz, Elon, Vahnii, Free, Yae, and Duce. They help me with graphic design, visuals, styling, production, etc. My bandmate SunRhe, she has been a ray of light (no pun intended) for me as far as always including me in opportunities and helping me get out there. Not to mention, my family and friends who had believed and supported me before other people began to notice.
