Introducing Women in Data

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meet Sadie St. Lawrence, Cicely Peace-Edouard, Jamie Thorpe, Nesha Jairam, Denise McKinley, Kacie Willis and Supraja Sharma.

Women in Data started in the fall of 2015 with a small group of women but a big vision. At the time, the founder of Women in Data, Sadie St. Lawrence, was attending grad school in analytics and noticed the disparity of women in the field. She felt this was a major issue that needed to be resolved as the future of jobs all would involve a basic data literacy. Therefore, Women in Data was formed with the mission to increase diversity in data careers. Today, Women in Data is in 11 countries and 32 different cities, Atlanta being one of those cities. Our leadership team in Atlanta are: Cicely Peace-Edouard | Chapter Lead and Co-Founder & CEO of The SimpleVUE. Cicely believes, “A woman should never put limits on her ability to be creative in solving customer and corporate challenges in a data-driven environment. Emerging fields today are augmented and virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, Artificial intelligence, and Smart Cities. All these fields can use a woman’s touch because they require a certain perspective of empathy and human interaction with data, which we excel at. Participating in Women in Data ATL gives its members the support and the confidence to kick open the doors of these emerging industries.”

Denise McKinley | Sponsorship Outreach Coordinator & Data Analyst. “WID ATL is a community, cheerleading team and safe space. There are so many gems among women in the data and tech industries that need to be shared among us and beyond us. We’re doing just that. We’ve earned our equitable space in data.”

Jamie Thorpe | Speaker Outreach Coordinator & Data Analyst Consultant. “The WID community instantly became a vital part of my development as a woman in the data world. It has given me the platform to inspire other women within our community. Women alone have limited power, but collectively we can make an impact! I am excited to be a part of the WID ATL chapter and ready to connect with other women to increase the potential for data to change the world!”

Nesha Jairam | Public Relations Coordinator Data & Systems Manager, Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. “Women in Data means empowerment to me. Joining WID has allowed me the opportunity to meet other women in my community with similar interests, work on a leadership team to bring tools to our network and advance my skill set in an interdisciplinary forum. We are working hard to diversity the data field while utilizing each other as resources as we continue to learn!”

Kacie Willis | Community Coordinator & Consulting Data Analyst, TRG Arts. “I recently entered the data field full time and discovered through WID, a group of mentors and peers who have made the transition feel so worthwhile. Serving alongside such dynamic minds is truly inspirational and pushes me to learn and grow in my STEAM career as much as I possibly can.”

Supraja Sharma | Logistics Coordinator & Data Analyst. “I feel that Women in Data is a collaborative space for women interested in data science to meet others, explore, and support one another towards their career goals. Data science is used in just about every field and WID is an organization that brings a group of diverse women together to share their unique experiences with data.”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road is smooth, but every bump along the way leads us to where we are supposed to go. We have wanted things to move a lot faster with Women in Data but looking back the timing has been perfect.

Women in Data – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Women in Data offer three pillars of service. One is to spread awareness through thought leadership events and networking opportunities. Second is education; we provide residency programs, virtual studies, life, and career coaching. Thirdly is a chance to access opportunities through our exclusive job board, career track modules, and leadership opportunities.
