Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilbert Hamilton.
Wilbert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Welcome to Hamilton Wealth Advisors, where our passion is teaching my community to create generational wealth. I, Wilbert Hamilton/Founder, began on this journey over 15 years ago as I started a career in financial services upon receiving my bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance. At the time, My goal was to manage my own money while having a successful career in the NFL. Well, like many of you have learned, God quickly showed me he had a different path and plan for my life, thus leading me in a direction I never anticipated.
But quickly as my career in financial services started to materialize, I realized I had been blessed with a gift and talent for financial planning. I received numerous awards such as President’s club, chairman’s council, being named newcomer of the year and advisor of the year at the young age of 25, my passion for more quickly grew.
In the fall of 2008, among one of the greatest stock market crashes ever, I stepped out on faith to do the unthinkable and starting my own firm, built on care, concern, and service. One of the greatest lessons my father ever taught me was that people don’t want to know how much you know until they find out how much you care! I pride myself in walking in that everyday of my life and I believe that’s it’s in that passion for helping people that set me and my firm apart from the rest.
I now own one of the few African-American Registered Investment Advisory firms in the country and have offices in multiple states and cities. I’ve been blessed to have a wide array of clients ranging from universities, corporations, hospitals, professional athletes, doctors, lawyers, etc… That has given my firm and me the unique ability and perspective in understanding what people are looking for and that’s education, expertise, and execution. I’m a true believer that most people don’t plan to fail but they do fail to plan!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road but the journey to greatness never is. Being a young black financial advisor is difficult in itself but doing it without the backing of a major firm is even harder due to the lack of financial literacy in my community and lack of resources. Unfortunately, the people that need you the most don’t understand that they need you or understand the value that you can bring. Not to mention, the only way to improve the African-American community is through ownership and being able to provide opportunities to those who look like me.
Hamilton Wealth Advisors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a full-service wealth management firm that specializes in retirement planning, wealth accumulation, and wealth transference. One of our major accomplishments was landing a university retirement plan by the age of 27 and adding another before I turned 30. The proudest moment would probably be when we became the first African-American owned Registered Investment Advisory Firm in Alabama. What has set us apart from our competition is that our growth has been purely organic by taking our business one client at a time and providing them the care, concern, and diligence they had yet to receive from a financial services company. We truly work with the motto that clients don’t want to know how much you know until they find out how much you care.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I firmly believe that life gives everyone at least one opportunity to create a better way for your life but hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence can bring about more opportunities that some would consider luck. “Luck is when Opportunity meets Hard Work & Preparation!”
