Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadé Hill.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Woman of God, wife, mother, writer, director, producer, mentor, design engineer and web/app developer are some of the many hats that I’ve worn. With over a decade in the design, fashion and film industries, my greatest accomplishment has been creating a platform that represents people of color in a new light through Jaido Studios. I am a native of Liberia, West Africa and I love giving back to the community through humanitarian work. My charity, The Edward and Irene Merab Foundation has been able to build churches, schools and assist families in need throughout Liberia and is in the progress of transitioning to assist the United States as well. My goal is to create captivating stories that break common barriers and reinvents the way that minorities are represented in today’s media.
Has it been a smooth road?
Breaking barriers is never a smooth transition. Creating characters and storylines that portray people of color as more than the help or villain has posed many challenges when pitching to networks and audiences that simply just aren’t used to seeing us as heroes; however, the entertainment industry as a whole has been taking steps in the right direction and have been much more receptive within the past few years. Technology and the ability to independently stream and market without a huge network backing has also a game-changer.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jaido Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
Jaido Studios is a production company and design studio that operates simultaneously. I’m a design engineer by profession so that side of the brand specializes in the development of websites, logos, stationary material, business branding and mobile applications. The production side is my passion which focuses on the creation of film, TV shows, music videos and promotional commercials from concept to post-production.
To date, I am most proud of my latest film “White Rose”. It is about a resilient preteen African-American girl who finds herself fighting to survive in the world of Sex Trafficking. The film has won best 2020 short film at the Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival, Semi-Finalist at the 2020 New York Cinematography Awards and is nominated for Best Short Film at the Liberian Entertainment Awards and Best Movie at the Australian LEA awards.
What sets my studio apart from others is the content that we create. Our motto is “Because Representation Matters” and we stand on that with everything that we do.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the entertainment industry being much more progressive over the next 5 – 10 years. The biggest shift being opportunities and equal pay for all based solely on talent and not race.
