Meet Camisha Pruitt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camisha Pruitt.

Camisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my brand for the love of timeless fashion from watching music videos, runways and old vintage movies. My love for black nostalgic hairstyles and fashion became my passion for incorporating timeless pieces to a more modern-day style. Back in the day, everyone dressed well and looked very polished and I wanted to be able to paint a picture of who we really are and stand for when we dress up and channel whatever character you want to be for the day. Black panther party is a prime example of making a statement without ever really having to say a thing!

That’s my goal, I want people to feel the history and presentation to start a conversation while having a timeless piece that you may not find anywhere to hold dear to you. Growing up in Alabama, I’ve always had big dreams to create a community that stood for something through the art of creation, whether it’s through fashion, the art of storytelling, or innovation. I attended my HBCU Alabama A&M, where I minored in fashion design where this became the birthplace for me, eventually I moved to Atlanta and it became magic from here.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been so smooth, in the beginning, I started working with a manufacturer who made me feel like other projects were more important than mines and took forever to start on my project, which pushed me back for months. Eventually, I found another company that took my designs seriously and worked tirelessly with me, that trusted my designs and were determined to create exactly it was that I needed. A lot of my pieces are very detailed so it was very detrimental to work with someone who was just as patient and passionate about creating my pieces and who aligned with my brand.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
“CAMISHA” stands for innovation, creativity, community, and change. My company is like black urban outfitters, where we create a lifestyle. My first collection featured swimwear and we are gearing up for another re-launch for the spring. Currently, we are working on a self-care collection and our first collaboration that will introduce another sector of products. I want to always be able to create an oasis for everyone to dream away and also give opportunities for collaborations to start my creative community by helping others achieve the same goals that I have. I’m known for my wild styles and out of this world designs, I’ve always been told I was different growing up but that has always been my fire to the flame. I’m most proud of my first collection because it truly showed what I stand for and how I want to be recognized. I think what sets me apart as a brand is that I’m actually channeling the energy and creating never-before-seen looks you won’t find at any other company.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always big into music, my daddy had and still to this day has a very superb record collection and the music would just take me away as a kid. It’s almost like drifting off into a dream world and actually being there. My parents knew how I loved music and tried to incorporate plays and instruments for me to do when I was a child. The older I became I realized not only did I love music but I loved how everyone looked and portrayed to look on the screen when I saw a music video because most of the time it was the very idea I had in my head when a song would play on the radio. I would describe my personality as very affectionate and passionate, I am truly an empath so when I go through things or feel things, my best creations stem from those roots, I feel deeply and create deeply.
