Today we’d like to introduce you to Kee the Performer.
Kee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born a creator. God gave me the natural gifts to sing, dance, choreograph, act, and write which contribute to me being an all-around performer today. My parents always told me stories of how I would hum the different theme songs from the shows I watched as a toddler but I wasn’t even talking yet. They knew early on I was born to be a star based off of my reaction when music would play. How I would try to dance but couldn’t stand so I was wiggling and rolling on the floor. My dad shared his broad range in music with me which opened the door to my love for the retro eras. He shared his knowledge as a music producer as well as a musician which influenced me to go after my dreams of becoming a singer/entertainer.
On the road to my dreams I was able to attend schools of arts to better my craft. I studied many styles of voice, dance, and became very versatile with my artistry. In my opinion being diverse makes you top tier because you are able to adapt to anything being thrown at you. I got to experience leading roles in musicals and even assisted with choreographing the scenes. I was constantly surrounded by other talented, inspiring creatives and it truly prepared me for my future as an artist.
It wasn’t until I graduated college that I really got to dive in to my career. I finally had the time to record, perform, and truly commit to myself. I have released two singles, “We Stepp’n Out Tonight” and “Psychedelic Hotline” along with the visuals for them on all music platforms. I am currently working on a new single and focused on completing my first EP project. My music may be that of going against grain but that’s what makes me different from the rest. As I stand on the shoulders of the great voices before me, I was born to sing, I was born to dance, I was born to entertain. I was born Kee the Performer!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Honestly, it has not been a smooth road for me but I look at it as part of the journey to my success. There are many components to manage when you are an independent artist. From promoting yourself to staying relevant, constantly creating and on top of that balancing work and everyday life. I am human just like any other person. I’ve suffered from depression and I’ve experienced loss that has changed my life forever. But in the end, I use those experiences to fuel me as a performer and to connect with my audience.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a multi-talented independent music artist with a retro style and sound of yesteryear. I am in love with the 70s and 80s era and a lot of artists/musicians from that time period have influenced me and my sound. Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, Donna Summers and The Gap Band just to name a few. My music is very upbeat and I prefer for the production to sound as live as possible. Today a lot of artist are releasing slower music with chill vibes so the fact that my music is the complete opposite is what I feel sets me apart and in my own lane.
Not only am I known for my talents but for my fashion sense as well. My dad always told me if you want to be a star you must like one at all times so I make sure I am on point wherever I go. It’s all about having the complete package as an artist and I truly believe I am the package and then some!
What I appreciate the most throughout my journey is when I fully execute my vision. Creating music and visuals for my music can be a long process so completing a project is a beautiful and inspiring moment. It genuinely gives me more motivation because as soon as I finish one project, I’m excited and ready to create the next. Not only does it make me proud to see my own visions but I thoroughly enjoy how my art influences and moves the people. I am one to make “feel good” music so to receive such positive feedback drives me to keep creating and confirms to me that I am doing what I am blessed to do.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over or really change something about my journey, I would’ve auditioned for Berklee College of Music in Boston. Not only would I have taken some great courses but I would’ve made important connections to further my career as an artist. I definitely feel it would have made a positive difference today had I attended but at the end of the day everything happens for a reason. I will make it to where I am destined to be.
