Community Highlights: Meet Rayah Houston of ShapedbyHouston

Hi Rayah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am an AAAI-ISMA Certified Personal and Master Trainer, Owner of Shapedbyhouston, Wellness Coach for Herbalife Nutrition and student at Georgia State University. Just a little about me, at a young age of 6 I had interest in a lot of activities. I played piano for the Georgia European School of music and also studied with a German Composer Mischa. I also studied classical music at Steinway Music Academy. I took ballet lessons also to see if I would like that and it didn’t really stick with me. Growing up, I used to hate the water but my parents pushed me into trying out for the Dunmoor Diamondbacks swim team. I grew to love swimming and swam for 8 years on the team and even received Recognition from Georgia Tech University state championship for 1st place in my group. In High school, I found interest to become a Cheerleader for the Varsity Basketball team for 3 years and was an Athletic Trainer for JV Football. During cheerleading we had to do a lot of routines and conditioning to stay up to par during the games so we wouldn’t get tired, and I loved the idea of being on the field with the football players to help them get ready for games. As soon as those seasons ended, I took interest in Cross Country Running team. Our coaches were also track coaches so we had to do a lot of sprints, stretches and full body workouts. I loved the way my body started to shape and my endurance grew and grew as much as I worked out after school with the team. Cross country took my interest into starting to go to the gym and train with a full-time track coach, Trinidad Toby. He pushed me to my limits and introduced me to a lot of new workouts for what I wanted to achieve and I stuck with it for several years. I was so interested in the body and healthcare before college, I attended Colombia University during the summer for their Advanced Medicine and Healthcare Conference and the Alumni program at Johns Hopkins University the following year. When I enrolled at Georgia State University, I majored in exercise science, I learned Anatomy & Physiology and became interested in becoming a Master Personal Trainer. I thought hey I see what these workouts are doing for me and how my confidence level is changing, I want to do the same for others. I decided to do research and study and it motivated me to become certified so that I could help others and enjoy doing it at the same time. As I went into college. In 2016, I grew more and more into fitness and I would always workout / train with my friends on campus because I always knew more than they did especially what they wanted for themselves. I got certified in 2019 and came out with my own fitness and lifestyle brand called ShapedbyHouston. ShapedbyHouston has waist trainers, workout sets, lounge wear, and so much more in the future I’m looking forward to sharing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, I’m not going to say it was rough but building a fitness brand in Metro Atlanta is a bit competitive. Everyone might have their own personal training career, but it just goes about what makes you different. I’ve struggled with almost giving up because I felt like maybe I wasn’t good enough to train or maybe I didn’t know what I was doing. I struggled with finding product/ manufacturers that wasn’t going to be a copycat of someone else’s product. I had my doubts on my business and trusting the right people to take business advice from and loosing motivation saying to myself what if this isn’t enough? But how can I succeed if I don’t try right? And go beyond my destiny. There was a time I didn’t have clients; I wasn’t selling anything for a consecutive amount of time and I just had to keep my head high and keep the faith.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about ShapedbyHouston ?
ShapedbyHouston is a fitness and lifestyle brand that empowers women to release their inner self. I specialize in strength and conditioning, calisthenics, and overall full body training. I put it all on the table when I’m in the gym working out or training. I push all my clients pass their limits to move there mind mentally to believe they can do anything if they stay away from the word “can’t”. I love building relationships with my clients to connect with them on a personal level, it keeps them motivated and open to being more discipline. I offer 1 on 1 personal training, group training, college discounts, and I always throw deals to my clients every month. What sets me apart from the rest is my encounter with people, because that’s what it’s all about what a person takes with them after their period of time with me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Customer service matters to me the most because it always matters how you treat and talk to someone especially if they are trusting you to change their lifestyle and habits.
