Today we’d like to introduce you to Abel Girma.
Abel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
MOBoombox was founded in 2014 by Abel Girma, Wayne Mclean and James Spears at Old Dominion University. The platform was created with the objective of creating a platform for emerging talents to showcase their craft while promoting and endorsing quality entertainment. Based in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) area, we hosted several events like our RnArt series where we feature rising talents from the art and music industry. We host events so the viewers cannot only read about new talents but see them perform live to get an overall vibe of what they bring to the culture.
Although events are an essential component of our platform the main content focus are media campaigns with talents in the urban entertainment community. Our media campaigns consist of interviews, podcasts, commercials and write ups. MOBoombox not only provides talent with promotion but we also provide branding and advertising services.
We pride ourselves on changing the way people view media. It is essential for us to be at the forefront for breaking talent & giving our audience a platform they can trust. By exploring our platform, you will get a little taste of what the entertainment world is and is becoming.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but it has been a progressive journey. One struggle that we faced when building up the platform is creating a consistent team with a variety of media related skills. Especially the earlier years when we were in college at Old Dominion University. Most of our team members like myself were students which had us juggling school, work and MOBOOMBOX. Then when transitioning post grad life which is between the years of 2016-2019, we had a lot of reshuffle when it came to team members; due to a platform revamp, team members relocating and just a lot growing pain related things. Although building a consistent team was one of our biggest struggles, I would say right now we have one of the best media outlet teams due to the wide variety of skills we have on the team.
Another struggle that we faced throughout the years have been working with talents in regards to events. One of the hardest things in the entertainment industry that we believe that other creatives would agree with is that organizing industry events with celebrities and talents are very difficult. Managing set times while also gauging when audience will show up for the event was one of the most difficult things when organizing events.
MOBOOMBOX – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MO was founded in 2015 with the idea of having a platform for evolving artists to showcase their talent and endorse quality entertainment that goes unnoticed in local communities. MO has hosted several events and media campaigns that provided an outlet for artists to advance onto opportunities with notable industry veterans. Not only do we endorse great upcoming talent, we let the viewers know what is trending in today’s entertainment by commentating on pop culture through our podcast, shows, and interviews as well curating groundbreaking articles.
The most we are proud of as a company is the way we grow our following with consistent content without us going away from our objectives.
What sets us apart is our diverse variety of content which is due to our wide variety of skills on our team. Our media and web team provide a vast amount of content from interviews, write ups, event coverage. While our event and marketing team provide events and campaigns to engage with our audience.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career when it comes to the platform is when we had a sold out and successful debut of our RnArt series. This when we featured rising painters, brands and artists to showcase their talent in Richmond, VA. The event was sold out and we received a lot of great feedback from audience and fellow platforms after that event.
