Hi N’jeri Agyeman + Serwa Kenyetta, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We (N’jeri + Serwa) founded Zaria Cards in 2018. We are a mother and daughter duo and come from a very creative background. Our love for writing and celebrating experiences birthed Zaria Cards. I (N’jeri), a stylist, model, actor, creative writer, poet, and entrepreneur, and Serwa, an author, motivational speaker, trainer, and entrepreneur, felt inspired to help others give and receive expression through something as simple but unique as a greeting card. Despite an individual’s experience and celebration, Zaria Cards aims to help express that in a unique and thoughtful way by creating moments that can be forever cherished. With our modern and classic card lines, Zaria Cards gives a fresh, bold, and rich perspective that anyone can relate to, express, and share with those that they love and care about. Our brand is about celebrating, supporting, and cherishing life and its special and unique moments. Zaria Cards specializes in one of a kind handwritten + illustrated greeting cards. Our cards are authentically handmade, designed in-house, and produced.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For starters, we are a new company and actually launched in the midst of the pandemic. Being a startup during this unique time has presented a unique set of challenges, some being solidifying the correct vendors to complement our company. One of the most significant challenges that we are focusing on right now is securing funding, which will enable us to effectively market and produce our products as well as create more brand awareness.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Zaria Cards specializes in handwritten and hand-illustrated greeting cards. We are known for our unique aesthetic when it comes to our greeting cards and brand. We entered the greeting card industry not only from our passion for creative writing and illustrations, but we wanted to fill a gap by providing an authentic, imperfect aesthetic that we did not see in the industry. When you look at our cards, you’ll be able to see that everything is handmade, ranging from our original handwriting to our illustrations. Zaria Cards gives a true scrapbook feel while remaining chic and timeless. Zaria Card’s goal is to celebrate life by creating special moments and that, we believe, is attainable through the overall experience with our brand. It all starts in our studio, from handmaking our product to sending it to production, to the customer opening our unique packaging and receiving their Zaria Cards. More than just a card, Zaria Cards is an entire experience, and our intention is for our customers to feel special and the rich aesthetic and thoughtfulness behind our brand.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Well, if you’re talking personally, food! We are both foodies and it definitely can brighten up our day. As it relates to our brand, it goes back to our name Zaria which is tied to the meaning light. It’s enriching to contribute to bringing light to someone’s day and helping others create special memories. Even helping someone say what they normally wouldn’t or maybe needed a push to say is special in itself. Zaria Cards is here to help you celebrate life one card at a time.
