Meet Nia-Ashani Powell

Hi Nia-Ashani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I’m Nia-Ashani, I am 21 years old, my birthday is June 17th and yes, I am a Gemini. I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York, moved to Maryland and now I am in Georgia. I’ve been dancing on and off all my life and then stopped when I graduated high school in 2017. I then picked dancing back up and started taking it seriously the end of 2018. I started posting my videos on Instagram and I’ve been consistent ever since. I started lacking emotion and motivation in my videos due to hardships like being in an abusive relationship. I talk about that situation a lot because I didn’t when I was actually in it, and it’s apart of my story and how I got to where I am now. I would never want any female to go through anything like that, it is a very traumatic, devastating and depressing thing to experience.

When I left that relationship, it opened my eyes. It made me realize that I need to start living and doing what’s best for me. I encourage any female that may be in that type of situation to ask for help and get out of there. I’m so happy to be where I am now and it wouldn’t be possible without my ESMG (endless summer music group) family, they are a big part of why I was able to take a big risk and go follow my dreams here in ATL. My goal is to become a professional dancer who dances in music videos, choreographs and to eventually be able to make a living off of something I love to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. I was recently in an abusive relationship which really took a huge toll on my life. I became distant with family, friends and I even lost myself. I’ve also struggled with depression, lack of motivation, low self-esteem and anger issues. I’ve really been pushing myself to do better.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a dancer and you can find my videos on all social media platforms. I am most proud of the fact that I am actually following my dreams. I risked it all and went for it. it’s only been a little over a month and good things have been happening already, this interview is one of them. I am so grateful for everything, big or small. I am really excited to see what’s in store for me.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see myself dancing with big music artist, on tv shows, and performances.
