Inspiring Conversations with POISE Incorporated

Today we’d like to introduce you to POISE Incorporated.

Positive Outreach Increasing Success through Example (POISE), Incorporated, began in 2015 as founders RacQuel Bell and Mandisa Taqqee saw a need in the community for an organization that helps urban youth to connect with themselves. They carved their own path by adopting a yoga-based curriculum that includes social and emotional learning (SEL) and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), which they offer to K-12th grade youth during the after-school hours. Since the launch of the signature program in 2018, POISE, Incorporated has partnered with many schools and Boys and Girls Clubs around the Metro Atlanta area and they continue to expand. Previous partners are Atlanta Public Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, After School All-Stars, Dekalb County School District, and more!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacles that POISE Incorporated has had to face thus far were that of learning how to navigate in the nonprofit sector, build connections, and secure funding that will ensure the longevity of the business. It is through the recent membership with the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce that has somewhat alleviated these concerns.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your organization?
POISE, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide curriculum-based programs for youth that aid in social and emotional development and high academic performance. Our three targets are Health Awareness, Community Strengthening, and Creative Expression. We touch on each of these targets within our in-house program and initiatives. We remain intentional with instruction and only bring in experienced personnel to implement the program in classrooms. Our other special focuses are heart health, mental health, educational enrichment, and STEAM education, which are also fused within our curriculum to some degree. Our signature program includes yoga, SEL, and STEAM education, and it was an immediate hit when it was launched as it is one-of-a-kind. The quality of what this program has to offer is what sets us apart from others. There is a need and a demand for this program, especially in today’s time. We are providing tools for the youth to cope with the new reality following the global pandemic and helping them to stay connected with themselves. This is what makes the work that we do so rewarding!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
It would be in your best interest to rely on your Alma Mater (if applicable), community organizations, sororities/fraternities, and/or your local Chamber of Commerce for networking purposes or if you’re looking for a mentor. LinkedIn is also a great place to start building connections. When you have a product that you know the world needs and you have the full confidence to launch this product, write a business plan and start working on your pitch. Nothing will hinder your success if what you have to offer is intentional and quality!
