Conversations with Lionel Jenkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lionel Jenkins

Hi Lionel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been riding dirt bikes since I’ve been a little boy. Riding dirt bikes is a big part of our culture down here in the rural country area I live in. I haven’t had a bike since about 9th grade because I was focused on other things but soon as I graduated and started my career after college I bought another bike. Almost everyday my friends and I would link up and ride and go on all kinds of adventures. One of my close friends Cam bought a go pro and started to record these adventures. I then asked what his plan was with the footage and he told me pretty much for safekeeping to laugh at later and I told him he was sitting on a gold mind.

Soon after, I started my YouTube channel and things took off fast. No one in the city was really putting bike life on a platform but I wanted to be the first. Riding all the time and racing was our life and I wanted to share this with the city. As time went on, the bigger, we got and we started to get a buzz in the city. I then dropped a cool logo and created Merch and things got even crazier. People started reaching out, wanting to do collaborations and wanting us to do different events and more. We are still growing each and everyday and we will continue to elevate.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, I would say the hardest thing for me has been trying to gain subscribers. We could easily gain a lot of views on a video but not everyone would subscribe. Another thing here recently would be staying consistent. I work a full-time job and my friends have their own things going on so it’s been hard to constantly drop content but I try to keep my followers engaged other ways like on Instagram etc.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I’ve always been known to be a cool, chill dude around my city. I’m friends with a whole lot of folks which made this Bike Life start-up easy for me so far as developing a following. I graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a degree in Physics and I have aspirations of becoming an engineer. I am most proud of my educational background because you do not see a lot of black men in the physics field.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is staying consistent and not letting outsiders stop you from reaching your goal. I’ve also learned that you have to mentally and financially invest in yourself to get to where you want to be.
