Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Weldon.
Hi Amanda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for art and design started at a very young age. I have always enjoyed creating and designing. The use of bright colors and bold patterns makes my mind come alive with ideas. I started art lessons as a child and continued on with them through part of college. I got married when I was 23, decided that college was not for me, and opened a small art, antique, and gift shop. After about three years, I closed the doors on that adventure and decided to pursue my art career full time. I didn’t want to keep a strict schedule or certain hours of availability. I needed a certain type of freedom. I began to work hard at it and for the past ten or so years, I have been able to live my life as a full-time artist and I wouldn’t change it for anything. I also owe so many thanks to my husband and family for being my greatest support system. Doing this full time is not always easy and can be so stressful. Having people who genuinely want to see you realize your dreams, that’s very encouraging.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. This career can get very discouraging. Sometimes your work isn’t selling, or your visions aren’t coming out like you’d like. There are times that months go by and I don’t feel inspired to create at all. That can be a tough place for an artist to find themselves. Luckily, when that wave of inspiration finally hits me, I tend to go a little wild! I feel like that’s ok though, for it to come in waves, like periods of rest and reflection followed by periods of creativity and productivity.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main mediums are acrylic and mixed media paintings. I’ve also been known to play with interiors and seasonal decor. I have a true love for mixed media abstract paintings and they are for sure my favorite to create. If I had to pick one thing that I’m known for, it would for sure be my use of color. I use very, very, bright colors in anything that I create or design. I always say there are no rules. You can’t be afraid to mix colors, textures, patterns- even ones you don’t think “go together.” I have never been a fan of what I call “matchy-matchy,” and I think that becomes very obvious when you see my paintings or a room that I’ve helped decorate.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me, about my work specifically, is that whoever sees it leaves feeling happier. If you want to study it, try to find hidden images or meanings in it, that’s great. I love that. If you want it because you need that dash of pink in your living room, that’s great. As long as it makes you smile, I’m good with it. I just want my work to evoke good emotions in people. It has a certain playfulness. I hope to always be able to say that.
