Today we’d like to introduce you to Dacia Davis.
Hi Dacia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been captivated by stories and the power of storytelling since my youth. I knew that my mission in life is to share stories that will uplift, encourage, and inspire communities across the globe. The day after my 43rd birthday, I found myself in a HORRIBLE mood because I was upset with myself for not executing my purpose of storytelling because I was so confused on how and where to begin. That evening, while I was sleeping, I had a dream about me finding my purpose and rebranding my passion. I felt like God was giving me a sign after a day filled in turmoil. In all honesty, God was revealing things to me while I slept.
In the vision, I started speaking different titles. Of those titles, I remember two: “Freely Speaking” and “Permission to Speak, Freely.” After reciting Permission to Speak, Freely, I started thinking about women who are often mistreated, mocked for being a victim of abuse, and, of course, women whose murders swiftly fade away and never receive justice. Also, I reflected on my own life of how I often silenced my voice in order to elevate the voices of other. I was a victim of domestic violence, bullying and suffered with low self-esteem for many years. I felt like my voice was not valued by others.
I chose to put everyone else’s happiness above my own, frequently crying in silence. I stayed constipated with emotions, and instead of releasing those toxins, I held them inside as they continued to make me ill. God permitted me to speak freely through my dreams, creating a space where I no longer seek permission from others to use MY voice. I am passionate about helping women and men find their voices by showing them how to give themselves permission to speak freely without limitations through THEIR narratives and NOT the narratives of others. As the Roving Journalist. I’ve created a platform that is a safe space where people can release their genuine emotions and gifts that will inspire, encourage, and motivate communities through the power of their stories.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, my road to pursuing my passion for storytelling was not easy. I knew to become a respected and accomplished storyteller. It was vital for me to get professional and educational training. I graduated from High school over twenty years ago, so enrolling in college was exciting, overwhelming, and intimidating. But I understood that it was a necessary move to accomplish my dream. Also, at the time, I was a mother of three school-aged children, a wife, and a full-time employee. Juggling all of those responsibilities was hard, but I pushed and sacrificed much of my social life with family and friends to complete my journalism program with honors while ensuring that my children excel in their studies and my household is functioning well.
Because I was a non-traditional student with a full-time job, I could not take advantage of internship opportunities like many traditional students on campus. Those opportunities gave them benefits to gain adequate skills and reputations with reputable employers, so after they graduate, they could walk into a job. After I graduated, I had to continue extensive research and teach myself about being a credible and experienced storyteller. I had to determine what kind of journalist I wanted to become and the type of stories I wanted to share. Also, I had to decide how to market my brand to my target audience and make sure to gain their trust as a respected journalist/storyteller.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a community journalist who created a platform named “#PermissiontoSpeakFreely” for community members across the globe where they can share their stories of accomplishments, gifts, overcoming trauma, etc., without fear, doubt, or any form of judgment. I am proud of how readers connect with the narrators on my platform and its positive life-changing impact on not only my audience but also the people sharing their stories. What sets me apart from other journalists is that my platform is therapeutic for both the narrator and the reader. When conducting an interview, it is like we are having real-life conversations between friends. I make them feel comfortable, and they can trust me enough to know that I am here to represent them in all of their greatness to the world. I take myself totally out of the equation and give them the entire platform to express themselves fully.
What matters most to you?
What matters to me is remaining positive and protecting my peace. I believe these qualities are critical to success and living a balanced and healthy life. Like the stories I share, I encourage others to stay ambitious and never give up on their life’s purpose.
