Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Tompkins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Joseph Tompkins and I’m the founder and CEO of the Coalition for Black Success and Black Success Clothing. I’m a native of Detroit, Michigan, and a renowned entrepreneur. I’m a member of Forbes the Culture and was recently named on Michigan’s 30under30 list and also nominated to be on the 2020 & 2021 Forbes 30under30 list. I spent eight-years in the United States Army and I’m passionate about helping people from all walks of life especially people of color. The Black Success Movement firmly believes in hard work, persistence, and consistency. While always jumping at the opportunity to give back to the community by Hosting Events and Partnering with Businesses in the city for food/coat drives and also sponsoring events to promote Black culture and Growth. My greatest accomplishment is being a father to my children Aiden and Ayanna, who are my daily motivation to succeed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not a smooth road. The Coalition for Black Success was started while I was homeless. I had nothing to my name but I knew I wanted to help people. I started writing motivational messages every day and built up a huge following of people who just needed some motivation to get through the day but I knew I was destined for more. I wanted to do more to change lives so after finally getting a job I started giving money out of my pocket to provide coats for kids in need but it wasn’t enough until I created my clothing line to make more money to help those in need. Little did I know how popular it would become overnight!!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I have a quote that u created that has to keep me motivated in my hunt to change the world and build up African American culture and that ”Mediocrity comes to those who wait, Greatness comes to those who pursue it.” I take that quote with me every day. Along with my kids are most definitely what I attribute my success to!.
