Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Brookes Belcher.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ben. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a singer-songwriter guitarist, studio owner. I am from Charleston WVA. I came to Atlanta after moving to Nashville to work as a songwriter. I toured the US and Canada for many years. Like all my peers, I wanted a major-label recording contract. At one point in my career, we worked with Bill Haverson (Crosby, Stills, Nash, Clapton.) We recorded many demos from publishing firms such as MCA and others. Bill garnered a record contract but the band disbanded here in Atlanta. At that point, I was disillusioned with the business of music, not the art. I decided to do it my way, which was to learn the art of recording, start my own label and release my own music in my own way. Of course, that meant working hard to fund all the gear for the studio and to pay the bills. It has been a long learning curve and I have learned that having a talented team is extremely important.
I am grateful and extremely blessed to have friends that have made this possible. We have been recording and releasing material for over ten years now. Shawn Sullivan (Engineer) came on board several years ago and has raised the level of output and quality tremendously! As all aspiring musicians know or should know… the music business as we once knew it no longer exists. We are all figuring it out. Social media is extremely important now, along with the ability to release your music worldwide. That power has its issues because the highway is flooded with content, good and bad. Its up to us as artists to find our audience now. I am proud of the material we have released and excited to keep moving forward.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s NEVER easy no matter your talent level. I have paid some hard dues and sacrificed things in my life that I regret, but I have kept moving forward and have realized that success is relative and doing your art… your way, was in my case, my true success and supporting myself at the same time. No one hands you the key and says ok your journey is done. It’s a lifelong journey. Enjoy it. I didn’t want to be identified singing some silly hit song at fairs and festivals the rest of my life. I have to create new music and not be locked into a box.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My “ Shack Studio “ does projects other than my records. Shawn and I, take select clients that have a budget and are ready to make music that moves people. We have some of the best mics and mic chains in Atlanta. We can record full bands or solo projects.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud of my family and my life at this point. I am very fortunate to be alive and do what I do.
