Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Alan Goldman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Goldman. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Detroit where I benefited from a supportive family, an early exposure to a variety of family small business opportunities, and an excellent public education. I obtained my medical degree at the University of Michigan where I developed an interest in surgery. I met my wife there and we have been married for forty-four years. We have five children and our fifth grandchild will be here soon.
We left Michigan for Atlanta and Emory in 1975 and have been here ever since. I was elected the first chief of surgery at North Fulton Hospital in 1983. I helped develop their Level 2 Trauma Center in 1989 and was the first chief of the Trauma service. I developed North Fulton Professional Building, a 100,000 square foot medical building in 1990. I served as managing general partner till 2012.
In 2006 I introduced a new way to treat hemorrhoids to the United States. We now have 15 offices around the country and 6 offices in Atlanta. At Hemorrhoid Centers of America, we help thousands of patients get the relief they deserve with a safe and relatively painless office treatment.
Has it been a smooth road?
Opening a medical office and Introducing a new medical treatment presented a number of challenges. We started with one office and one employee, Nicole. She is a very remarkable person who is now our practice administrator managing multiple locations. She also happens to be my daughter and an award-winning artist.
Nicole and our IT head, Scott, helped me develop our web site 10 years ago. It was difficult to reach the public with our new hemorrhoid treatment. Fortunately, along came the internet and Google. Our website allows us to reach thousands of people who are looking for a safe effective non-surgical hemorrhoid or anal fissure treatment. Most people are reluctant a to discuss their hemorrhoids with others. This makes it more of a challenge to get the word out that there is a better treatment than surgery or hemorrhoid creams you buy at the store.
We found hemorrhoids to be a very popular search keyword. Many suffer from hemorrhoids and are embarrassed to get help or fear what they have heard about surgery. We have tried a number of marketing vehicles. Our website is essential for patients to find us. They can find a large amount of important information there about non-surgical office treatment. Patients come to us from all over the world.
Our “family” business is very compassionate. Our employees have been with us for
many years. All of us understand we are here to serve our patients. It is an honor to help our patients find the relief they deserve. We commonly say here “Thank you so much. I only wish I would have found you guys years ago.”
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hemorrhoid Centers of America – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are the largest and most successful hemorrhoid practice in the US. We have performed over 30,000 office hemorrhoid banding procedures. This unique experience allows us to help almost all patients avoid surgery.
Everyone has heard hemorrhoid surgery is very painful and should be avoided. Unfortunately, there are still over 100,000 hemorrhoidectomies done each year in the US. Every day we successfully treat patients in our office who had been told surgery was their only choice.
It is important to remember not all rectal pain, bleeding, bumps, or itching is due to hemorrhoids. The rise of colon and anal cancer in younger people makes it more important than ever to have a careful examination.
The human papilloma virus (HPV) epidemic is so bad that nearly all sexually active people will be exposed to it. HPV is responsible for the rise in cervical and anal dysplasia (pre-cancerous changes) as well as ano-genital warts. The HPV vaccine should be given to boys and girls before they are sexually active. Screening for anal dysplasia is available with the anal PAP test for those at increased risk. We recommend this test for HIV patients, those engaging in receptive anal intercourse, history of cervical or vulvar dysplasia or cancer, and immune compromised patients.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love Atlanta and its beautiful people, homes, weather, restaurants, parks, sporting venues and teams. The diversity of our city is amazing. It has been an amazing transformation over the last 40 years. Every day we say a prayer of thanks for the opportunities Atlanta presents. I meet people from all over the world. It is an honor to help them heal.
My staff struggles to travel to our variety of locations. Patients’ number one reason for being late is the traffic. Let’s try harder to fix our roads.
