Inspiring Conversations with Latrice Dyer of Ready, Set, Goals!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrice Dyer.

Latrice, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I come from a family that taught me the importance of saving. However, there were a lot of lessons I learned on my own. I did not learn about financial literacy in school, I learned thru hard lessons; I learned thru trial and error. Monthly budgeting was always something very important to me but as I became an adult, I realized that so many people do not budget their finances, including some of my peers at the time. This made me wonder if children are not taught financial literacy in school and if they are not taught by their parents, then how exactly are our children learning these tools? This is where my vision for Ready, Set, Goals! LLC comes in. The seed for this business idea was planted a short time after I earned my master’s degree in Finance but I allowed fear to get the best of me.

Ten years later, I finally grew enough courage to manifest my dream! The focus of Ready, Set, Goals! is financial literacy. Lessons on money management/financial literacy should begin in the early years. Adults who were never taught financial literacy often struggle to provide the right lessons to their children, which can result in an endless cycle. As a result, this often leads to financial hardships, poor money management and irresponsible decisions. I’m here to help break that cycle NOW! I teach children ages 8-18 years old on many concepts that could potentially aid them in making wiser financial decisions. In my sessions, we discuss any and everything connected to financial decision making. Some of the topics we discuss are budgeting, renting vs owning a home, what to expect after college (student loans), entrepreneurship, investments, insurance and do many more topics! I know this is something our children need! I stand behind my business because I know this is something that can be life-changing for a child!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating my business has surprisingly been a smooth transition! I used my challenges to create my vision for Ready, Set, Goals! My goal was to create a program based on my own financial mistakes so the next person could benefit from my experiences. If anything, I wish I didn’t let fear get in my way! I had the ability to start my business years ago but I constantly would talk myself out of the idea. My biggest advice to readers is don’t let fear of failure get in the way of your dreams!!I Do it scared!

As you know, we’re big fans of Ready, Set, Goals! For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The brand is all about empowering children!! Children are our future! I believe with the right guidance I can help them to have a better understanding of financial literacy concepts at a very young age. I want my students to see their true potential. Ready, Set, Goals! is more than teaching financial literacy concepts, it’s a mentorship as well.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Ready, Set, Goals! is currently 100% remote. I made a conscious decision to make my program virtual because of the current state of the world. Through my research, I have learned that parents were not comfortable with their children being in a physical classroom in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak. My online sessions have allowed children to learn financial literacy concepts in the comfort of their own homes. In the next 5-10 years, assuming the pandemic is over, I would like to bring an in-person aspect to my business. I would like to incorporate field trips and public speaking engagements. I would also like to incorporate youth ambassadors.
