Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Jean.
Kelly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The idea of starting my own clothing line came from going to music venues, Hip-Hop festivals and people were wearing clothes not related to Hip-Hop. I would see DJ’s wearing plain T-shirts or hoodies with brands that didn’t relate to the culture. I myself would browse through my clothes and think, where can I get clothes that represent the culture? Instead of waiting on someone to create it I did it myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most businesses, especially small businesses gaining the capital to start was the major issue. Finding models to wear my clothes for little compensation. Investors who believed in my vision. Seeking celebs that would wear my clothes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My clothing line caters to DJs, Artists, Producers, and fans who love and support Hip-Hop culture. There is no other clothing company that caters to the Hip-Hop Community like Affordable Luxury Wear. We make clothing fashionable and fashionable fit for comfort. We also have a collection of clothing targeted towards women of color called the A.F.R.O collection. It’s a very powerful message for women of color who continue to strive and thrive in a society that shames them because of their body, hair, and skin color.
What were you like growing up?
I always had a big imagination. I would tell people the things that I would imagine. They would say I was living in my own world or I had a crazy imagination. I understood they couldn’t see my vision. “Eyes that see is common, but eyes that have vision is rare” Anonymous I’m a competitive person. I don’t have to be perfect but I have to be the best. I’m definitely a creative person who likes to be around other people who are pursuing what they want in life.
