Today we’d like to introduce you to Valencia VBlacK.
VBlacK began her music career in the church. At age four she began singing in the choir and was instantly in love. Her love for music was groomed by her parents when they purchased a record player. VBlacK then took it upon herself to study the rhythms and sounds of artists like Michael Jackson, The Staples Singers, Gladys Knight and Prince. She was invited to All-City chorus in school where her music teacher deemed her as a natural born entertainer.
As a preteen she has gifted a stereo for her birthday and that’s when it became evident that music was becoming a huge part of her life. She went on to join the band and became a percussionist. The best thing about her at this age was her ability to construct a show. She participated in talent shows and pep rallies that literally drove crowds wild. She has the ability to capture an audience and deliver that “wow” factor. These early experiences were the very things that lead her to continue her pursuit to become an artist. While attending college, she would frequent Atlanta, GA to record songs she’d written and participate in writer’s workshops. She even forecasts her future in the song she wrote about her home state entitled “VA Raised Me.” The music industry can be a very strenuous industry, which ultimately lead to her taking a break at music to rebrand herself and strategize to navigate through as a strong black woman.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With this being a male-driven industry, it’s no secret that things can be a little more difficult for women. When I first decided to become an artist, I would visit Atlanta often. I’ve run into A&Rs that have made me feel like I had to be intimate with them in order to get ahead. I’ve had producers that I’ve worked with suddenly end business relationships with me simply because they were attracted to me and couldn’t stay focused on the business. I recently ended a ten-year relationship with one of my favorite producers because he some how fell in love with me in my opinion. I’m always looking for professionalism within this workspace. It’s very important for me to be taken serious as a Black woman in business. As artists, we works so close with men on most occasions so I always make professionalism my first priority. I actually took about a nine-year break to regroup. I was distraught and really wanted to give up because there is almost no way of escaping the harsh realities of the music industry but I know I’m built for it, and I have to reach some little chocolate girl with the same struggles and so Vblacks Back‼️
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I consider myself a hip hop artist. I am currently writing for other local artists as well as composing my very first EP. It’s absolutely long overdue. I think overall, my specialty is writing. Most artists have a particular sound they stick with, but what sets me apart is that I will write to any beat/track. That’s the challenge for me. To take a blank canvas and create a masterpiece. I’m most proud of my writing ability because I’ve been called a D list writer before. So my job is to perfect my pen with each new song. I inspire people daily just by writing. Like I’ve literally had friends become artists just because they heard my story and understand my talent. I’m thankful to God because sometimes I amaze myself at how I’m able to hear music. I feel it first, then I hear the background sounds, and finally I memorize the lyrics.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am very hard on myself. I’m an extremely hard critic. I never think my music sounds good enough. I’m shy, like 5% and I love food! Also, I’m afraid of cats, like terrified!
