Life & Work with Kara Shipp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Shipp.

Hi Kara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was finishing up with a program at my former school when the pandemic officially hit and figuring out the next steps of the school year. I was thinking about all the past businesses in the past I tried to start but due to a number of various reasons, I was unsuccessful. One day, I went on YouTube and put in “How to make lipgloss”? Automatically, I was seeing Black Girl Magic because I was seeing black girls like myself making money from making lip gloss and other items. When I decided that making lip gloss was my next business, I knew that I had to find a name that represents my vision, and that’s when I came up with Krowns Of Royalty.

One boss queen I started watching was Boujie Barbie and watching her past videos gave me inspiration and motivation that yes, you can do this. I immediately started ordering items on Amazon to try out the way Boujie Barbie did hers and adding a few secret indigents to make mines pop and soon, I had more like five different colors. Soon after my logo and website were where it needed to be and I was ready for launch day, 05.11.20. Soon after launching, I had moved from the living room to the basement, then to my mom’s old room in which I had my own lil office. One day, I had decided to take a leap of faith I started wholesale and just like that, my business was booming. My wholesale kits were the reasons why my business went from 1-2 orders here to there to 5-6 wholesale orders a week. Fast forward, Krowns Of Royalty has made close to $2k in sales within the launch year. With my one year anniversary right around the corner, I am bringing out brand new lip gloss colors, products, logo, and website.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a new business isn’t always peaches and cream. My struggles were how to make my business stand out, who is going. To buy from me and find the right formula. Finding the formula for my lipgloss is essential when standing out among the crowd. My formula was always too soupy or just wasn’t right. I had spent time after time making my formula just right for not just me but my customers. My next point was always in the back of my mind because there have been times when I didn’t get any sales but I found ways to interact with customers. My wholesale kits were the main reason why my business stood out because I had three separate kits to cater to every level of starting your business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of my business, I work full time as a Special Education Paraprofessional in the Atlanta Public School system. I work in the profession to be able to make my business succeed to eventually stop working for others. I am ready to be my own business. My goal for 2021 is to continue breaking generational curses. I am here to prove that taking a leap of faith to do your own thing and turn it into a business is possible. Anything is possible by faith.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
My important lesson is to trust yourself and go with your gut. My business is my business… At the end of the day, I make all the decisions about Krowns Of Royalty.
