Today we’d like to introduce you to Ada Uqdah.
Hi Ada, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started cooking when I was just seven years old. My grandmother was faithful to Sunday services down at her church. She would have me get in that kitchen and help her prepare for our Sunday family dinner before her departure. I would be soaking black-eyed peas, helping clean Collard greens, or beating up the batter for some good ole southern cornbread. By the time I was twelve, I’d fall in love with food and cooking.
In Junior High school, I attended Sister Clara Muhammad School in Queens, New York. Every Friday, I would have a bake sale to help raise money so I could attend the College tour and every Friday, I sold out. That is when I realized cooking was my passion. I attended the French Culinary Institute in New York for a sort period of time because I felt it wasn’t for me. I’m happy to say I now own my company Succulent LLC, which is a Halal gourmet take-out. Catering to people with the diet restrictions of only eating Halal meats.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would definitely say this road has had some bumps and lumps lol. I’ve struggled with finding the right recipe to my success, whether it be composing a good menu for the week down to finding reliable help.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make Halal soul food with a worldwide street food twist, only using Zabiha/Halaal meats. I would have to say I’m known for three things. My Banana Pudding, my signature Smoked Mac and Cheese, and of course my Famous Braised lamb with a Senegalese twist. I’m most proud of myself for actually jumping out of the window and starting a business my people can enjoy and my Children would be proud of. The amount of love, and passion put into my food is what sets me apart from other. Try and find out!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Of course! Never take three things for granted. Time, Family, Health.
