Inspiring Conversations with Artis Smith of Aum Shanti Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Artis Smith.

Hi Artis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was first introduced to yoga in the early 90’s. At that time, I was more interested in the meditative aspects and not focused on doing any Asana. For about seven years, I studied Soto Zen Buddhism at the Atlanta Soto Zen center. Then I moved to the Virginia Beach area. This where I was first introduced to the physical Asana practice of yoga. I was hooked after my first class and started teacher training soon after. I received my teaching certification from Atma Bodhi Yoga in Virginia Beach, VA in 2014. I received my teacher training certification in Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga from Manju Jois in 2015.

My primary teacher at this time is David Garrigues. I have completed a teacher’s track training with Garrigues and attended four workshops with him. I have been teaching for seven years: six years teaching in Virginia Beach and a year in Atlanta. One of the major things I noticed in the yoga industry was the lack of people of color. I have had uncomfortable situations in all white yoga studios. And I was sure I was not alone. I decided to open a yoga studio that was welcoming to everyone regardless of race religion or sexual orientation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a pretty smooth road so far. Taking to consideration the fact that we opened the studio in the middle of a pandemic. We still seem to be growing at a slow, but steady pace.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Aum Shanti Yoga?
We are the only minority-owned Yoga Studio in Augusta, Georgia. And the only studio in Augusta with a Ashtanga vinyasa yoga program.. We specialize in traditional yoga, with a modern twist.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to people who are starting out with yoga is to find a studio that is rooted in Hatha yoga. Look for a teacher that you feel comfortable with, and one that has their own personal practice.
