Today we’d like to introduce you to Jody Joe.
Hi Jody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started making music in 2019. I’ve always liked all types music, from country to hip hop to reggae. I grew up playing sports (football, basketball, soccer, track) as a child. I grew up wanting to play in the NFL. I also would think I was a rapper too. I used to rights rhymes in the 5th grade. I even named myself Joker when I like ten years old. Sports took control of my life and I went on to play basketball in college. When I moved to Marietta, GA in 2014, I went to a school called Life University, Atlanta put me back in that mode to compose music but I never pursued it. I used to tell all my teammates that I was gone start making music when I get out of school.
I ended up leaving Life University and going to a school called Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. Had my daughter in Journei Wilbert in 2017 and graduated with a Psychology in 2018. While trying to figure out my next move, I went to my cousin Kangaroo in-house studio and made a track. The track was never put out but I knew from that day forward that I could make good music if I put the time in. I started going to the studio more and more and in 2019, I put out an Ep titled “Not Your Average Joe” The response I got from it let me know that I was on to something. Dealing with family issues and legal problems, I became unfocused and it derailed my music career and momentum. Early 2020 I linked up with $hrames that I knew from middle school and high school to work on music. We did our first song together and that’s when everything started to click. I ended up putting out two singles and two videos in 2020, “Rasheed Wallace” and “Flodgers” which were both recorded and mixed by $hrames. I continued to go back and work with $hrames do to the fact that we work well together. Jan 29th, I dropped my debut album titled “Playa $hit” and it’s currently catching momentum. $hrames produced seven songs on the album is featured on one song. I am currently building a team to be able to level up in my musical journey.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not. The biggest thing I would say is funding. Being an independent artist, you have to pay for everything and I mean everything. Beats, studio time, mix and mastering, promotion, marketing, booking, videos, features and everything that comes with being an independent artist all while trying to maintain a certain type of lifestyle/living. Being an independent artist comes with so many sacrifices.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I look at myself as a professional creative. A musical entrepreneur. I make music, I have a clothing brand called “Not Your Average Joe” I’m most proud of my latest project, “Playa $hit” it’s one of the most versatile albums out but it all comes together to for a common concept. I would say my originality really sets me apart from others. Me just being myself in my superpower. I’m Not Your Average Joe.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Doing good business and being punctual. Time is money and I’ve come to realize that people don’t like waste time or money. Be on time and pay your dues.
