Conversations with Greg McCarthy Jr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg McCarthy Jr.

Hi Greg, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my Mass Media journey after transferring from Florida A&M University to Valdosta State University in August 2012. I studied Mass Media in a period of two years and received my Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in December 2014 with the knowledge of videography, photography, scriptwriting, studio and editing experiences added to my repertoire. After college, I created my production company, Viisionary Productions, LLC on August 3, 2016. Since then, I have become a photographer, videographer, scriptwriter, director, filmmaker and drone pilot for aerial photography and videography.

For these past four years, I have captured Atlanta’s beauty from the massive skyscrapers to the exotic animals at Zoo Atlanta both from the ground to my drone in the sky. I have also worked with fantastic models, created drone videos dedicated to Atlanta, including the Super bowl LIII aerial video & just released Viisionary Production’s first short film, “DoubleCross” which I wrote, directed, produced & starred in, and I released Halloween 2020.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to a successful production life hasn’t been easy, yet it has toughened me up and gained me the ever-growing knowledge within the Mass Media realm. It has been most difficult gaining the proper equipment I would need to get started when there is a very wide variety of equipment to obtain and it’s also tricky cause in Production, the equipment is constantly evolving, so you have to keep up with the times constantly. Another difficulty I’ve had to deal with a lot are clients who are unreliable and end up backing out, working with “divas” who have a god complex, models trying to get freebies or a client not getting across their vision properly, but that’s how the game goes, not everyone will be easy to work with. These obstacles has proven exasperating, but the road to success (in any career path you take) is never an easy one and I’d prefer the ladder over the escalator.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a proud videographer, photographer, scriptwriter, director, drone pilot & editor for my company Viisionary Productions, LLC. So far, I am best known for my aerial videography from my drone, the DJI Mavic Pro. My drone videography & photography definitely sets me apart from other filmmakers in Atlanta because there is only a hand full of us that do aerial photography & videography, and I have only seen only one person from Atlanta doing drone videography and that is yours truly. Everyone else posts up awesome drone photography, but Viisionary Productions takes it further by filming all through and over Atlanta from the buildings with the Super Bowl LIII logos posted on them, the skyscrapers, Centennial Olympic Park, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, CNN Headquarters, the State Farm Arena, the State Capitol Building, the Al-Farooq Masjid Mosque, just to name a few places. It’s important to me that everyone see both (literally) the highs and lows of Atlanta because there is beauty in every area of this city and I want everyone to see my vision of it and I can do that with a drone video better than I ever can with just a photo.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The best qualities and characteristics that have made me successful is definitely having a work horse drive, confidence, a creative vision and a righteous team. Before Viisionary Productions came about, I’ve always been a work horse when it came to completing my tasks, from high school to college & no professionally, I would spend up to or more than half the day completing my tasks in order to get it out as quickly as possible so I can spot any errors or issues and have more than enough time to correct them and move to the next. Confidence within myself got me far because that when I know I can do something I put my mind to, I can move mountains so long as I keep my third eye open and don’t lose focus with my goal. Having a creative vision has made me successful, because I have always sought to get into Mass Media and bring a different vision to the world that’s completely original and that you haven’t seen from another person and each time, I take my vision past the man I was yesterday and keep that same mind state going, “be better more creative than I was yesterday.” Lastly, having a righteous team is most definitely a must have, because in Production you Can Not do everything on your own! Always remember it’s called a film crew, but when you work with a phenomenal and like-minded crew like I do, you will have the best version of your vision that you can ever hope to get when filming your vision.
