Community Highlights: Meet Jennifer McGowan of ReGenerate Physiotherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer McGowan.

Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a daughter to a mother who suffered from pain pill addiction, bipolar depression, Chrons Disease, and chronic pelvic pain. I lived a life loved but neglected… and I had the drive to overcome, to live a healthy life, to help empower women and men struggling with pain. I was injured as a collegiate athlete – track & field hurdler and knew that I wanted to become a Physical Therapist. During my undergraduate studies, my mother took her own life as a result of her life-long struggles; I was 21 years old. Although it rocked every part of my life, it didn’t rock my desire to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

I graduated in 2008 as a Doctor of Physical Therapy and moved to several states pursuing further certifications and education to become a skilled Physical Therapist in manual therapy. Always in my heart, I knew I would open my own practice. I become a mother in 2011, moved to several states and learned that Orthopedic Physical Therapy was enjoyable, but it didn’t seem to be enough for me to stay away from my children. In 2016, I had my twins (and was a mother to a 4-year-old and two-year-old)… my body was amazing for birthing these babes, but my body and whole being felt depleted. It was in my postpartum recovery, which was full of exhaustion, depletion, and functioning in auto-pilot that I finally understood why my mother may have drifted into such a deep pain pill addiction. She was probably depleted postpartum emotionally, physically, and mentally. It was also my physical recovery of urinary leakage with exercise, Diastasis Recti (ab separation) that wouldn’t heal after the twins, pelvic pain and back pain that I realized… I need a Pelvic Physical Therapist to help me heal. So I sought care, and I also knew that it was my time to open my own Physical Therapy Practice, and I would specialize in Pelvic Physical Therapy.

So, when my twins were 18 months (six year old and three year old) at home, I did just that. I took further coursework to specialize in Pelvic Health and business coaching to open a private practice. I wanted to serve women in my community because there is such little awareness of women’s health and postpartum care in the United States. I opened a private practice, ground up on my own (of course, a little help from my supportive spouse), hustled to meet providers and get to know my community so I could offer another solution for women and men that struggle with pelvic health dysfunction. Now, my practice continues to grow and serves women and men for pelvic health issues. We help women and men with pelvic pain, urinary and bowel issues, prenatal/postpartum care, sexual dysfunction, and Orthopedic pelvic injuries and pain without depending on medications and surgeries. Through this journey, I have learned to heal my heart and soul from the trials and tribulations I have faced as a child of a mother who was stuck in her pain pill addiction and pain.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh wow… there have been obstacles of fear of failure, of difficulty getting business into the clinic, of self doubt. I suffered a bit from cortisol depletion and anxiety – this was driven from my human giver syndrome and having a difficult time with making boundaries with my business in my life. I’ve had a big journey on self-care and what that means to me. This has helped the hard times seem easy.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ReGenerate Physiotherapy?
ReGenerate Physiotherapy is a Pelvic Physical Therapy clinic that specializes in helping women and men with urinary and bowel issues (i.e. urinary leakage and frequency, bowel leakage, constipation), pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, prenatal/postpartum care. We are a clinic that sees clients one-on-one with 45-60 minute sessions. We are the only clinic that has specialized pelvic physical therapy services south of Atlanta. More than anything, what I want the readers to know about the services I offer is that there are answers and treatments to pelvic health concerns listed above, and they can find lasting relief without having to depend on medications, pads, or surgeries.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Atlanta for the cultural diversity and the home place of the Civil Rights movement. I love how there is much more integration in this city than in other cities I’ve lived in up north and out west. I love food too!! I love all the great places to eat at in ATL, especially Buford Highway. Not much I don’t like about Atlanta. It’s like any other busy city in the United States with traffic.
