Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Golub.
Emily, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started G&G 4 years ago in an effort to find easier ways to eat local! I always loved participating in a local community supported agriculture (CSA) box program where I got a box of farm fresh veggies every week, but sometimes I didn’t know exactly what to do with all the fresh veggies in my box! I was traveling a lot for work and I really enjoyed the connection with our local farmers and food artisans at the farmers market, but wasn’t always able to find the time. I started G&G to help make eating local delicious dinners easy! We’ve been steadily finding new ways to help serve customers in and around Atlanta with delicious meal kits, great groceries and easy prepared foods.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting your own business is never easy! It always takes at least 3X longer and 3X more money than you think it’ll take! I’ve certainly had moments where our growth wasn’t exactly what I had hoped or we have supplier issues or trouble keeping up with the constant grind of running a logistic-heavy business. One of the things I never anticipated with our business was how logistics-focused we’d end up being.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Garnish & Gather story. Tell us more about the business.
Garnish & Gather is a local Atlanta based meal kit company. We work directly with local farmers and food artisans to create delicious seasonal recipes for our meal kits. We even have a special series of meal kits featuring recipes from Atlanta’s top chefs so our customers can cook like their favorite restauranteurs in their own kitchens! We also have a great selection of local groceries from peaches & tomatoes to fresh baked bread, farm eggs, local jams and more. We even have prepared lunches, soups from Souper Jenny, salads and pastries to help with meals all day.
As meal kits have become much more popular over the past few years, we’ve really been able to differentiate ourselves by building a sense of community between our suppliers & farmers and our customers. Our customers can really feel a sense of connection with the food their eating and the story behind it. We also have a much more flexible model that allows for one-time ordering without subscriptions, no minimums and ability to customize meal selections & grocery orders each week. Lastly, we don’t ship! We actually hand deliver meals to homes and pick up locations all around Atlanta so there’s not bulky wasteful packaging and it’s much eco-friendlier.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think the main role luck has played in my life is the great people in it! I’m lucky to have an amazingly supportive husband who has let me take this crazy risk. And I’m incredibly lucky to have such supportive parents who have been role models as entrepreneurs and helped us get off the ground!
