Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Coleman.
Kristy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always enjoyed playing piano, and I knew early on that I would love to teach. I love mentoring and helping students through the medium of music.
I started piano only in high school and worked really hard to audition for the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. I was accepted and graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Music, and my emphasis was Piano Pedagogy.
Upon coming back home to North G.A. I had a really slow start. All of my connections were in Columbus. I took a part-time job at the local power company, and 2.5 years later I walked away with a leap of faith and belief in myself.
Today, I personally teach over 70 students privately each week as well as mentor and employ a student teacher.
Has it been a smooth road?
Piano teaching has always been very natural to me. In that sense, it has been a smooth road. I have, of course, grown in my own teaching. Through personal trial and error, research, and blogs I’ve discovered better approaches that work for students. I’ve learned to adjust MY teaching based on how the student learns, and I have learned that everyone must be taught in a way that is best for their learning.
I believe there is always room for personal growth and development, and believing in that, I aim to never quit growing or learning myself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kristy Music Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
Kristy Music Studios specializes in Piano teaching. I am known for bringing an energetic, fun, off the bench approach to piano lessons. If we’re not having fun, something is wrong!
I also believe in developing the entire musician, so my students learn all aspects of music: theory, history, ear training, improvisation, rhythm, technique, etc. However, I’m always looking for new games and ways to reinforce each aspect of music.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, we hope to have a recital hall and more lesson rooms, and while piano will always be our forte, I do see KMS offering lessons for other instruments in the near future.
