Meet Noemi Wilson of Anew Acupuncture & Wellness in Lexington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noemi Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Noemi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey with Acupuncture began when I was 42 weeks pregnant with my daughter, Skye, and I was wanting to have a home birth with a midwife, but there were no natural signs of labor. In order to avoid being induced at the hospital, I was told to give Acupuncture a try, so I did. About 24 hours later, I went into labor. I was shocked that this worked but at the same time, I was also intrigued. Two years later, I enrolled in Acupuncture & Massage College in Miami, FL.

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Master’s of Chinese Medicine in 2009. I started working part-time for myself in Florida getting out of school and sharing space with one of my professors. About a year later, I had the opportunity to come up to SC and run a friends Acupuncture clinic while she took Maternity leave. When I came up to visit, I realized how much cheaper the cost of living was here compared to Florida. After my friend returned back to work she offered me an opportunity to stay, so I did! I worked with my friend at her clinic for a year and then I ended up doing contract work at a Chiropractic office for three years. After 4 years, I decided to have my own clinic, so I opened my clinic in October 2015 and have thus expanded to a second location and hired another practitioner.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I learned a lot by being employed by other people. How I was taken advantage of, what I wouldn’t do to another employee, how I would treat my staff, how I would run my business etc. I’ve had to take out high interest loans because my credit wasn’t so good when I opened my business, but I have learned a lot along the way and now have better opportunities. Balancing my work-life and personal life has probably been one of the harder challenges. Being a single Mom for the last two years has been challenging while growing my business. I always struggle with how much time I put into work because I love what I do and how much time to put in at home, because I want to be there for my daughter. It’s a constant struggle I still have not perfected. Hiring people is tough too. Some people just want to get paid without doing the work. It’s hard to find people that are as motivated as you.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Anew Acupuncture & Wellness – what should we know?
Anew Acupuncture & Wellness specializes in wellness of the whole body. This included Mind and spirit as well. We offer Acupuncture (both private and Community Acupuncture), Herbal Acupoint Injection Therapy, Chinese Herbal Medicine consultations, Cupping, Tuina Massage and Aromatouch massage with essential oils on a daily basis. We have made a name for our self in the community with cupping. I have taught classes to my clients and professionals within the community. We also treat most aspects of health from internal medicine, to pain and fertility.

We are most proud of as a company to be able to offer the Community Clinic, even if it’s once a week. This offers clients an opportunity to get Acupuncture treatment for a very affordable price. There aren’t many business models like this and we are the only one to offer this care in Columbia.

New clients pay $50 and then returning patients pay on a sliding scale $20 -$40, whatever they can afford. We created this to be able to offer alternative health care to everyone! Our goal is to eventually hire another practitioner who can offer Community clinic 5 days a week.

What sets us apart from others, I believe is the care we give. We are always present for our patients and offer compassionate care.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have a very driven personality. I always have. Even at an early age, I knew how to set goals and I remembered how good it felt to achieve them. I know that my passion and love for what I do, also translate to the success of my business. Plus having a minor in entrepreneurship and a BA in communications and being a Store Manager for Urban Outfitters for several years gave me some perspective on how to run a business from the customer service side of the business to the day to day operations and handling employees.
