Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty McIntyre.
Misty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey by working in an outpatient therapy agency setting for mental health, where I wasn’t feeling as though I was answering my calling of working with relationships and couples. My training is marriage and family therapy and I really wanted to use that knowledge and expertise as much as possible. The clients I saw were typically dealing with mental health issues and diagnoses that required psychiatric care and medication management.
There is a wealth of resources in our community for those who want those types of services. Then, I had something happen in my own life that rocked me, and despite having 100 places I could turn, I felt alone and isolated as a prospective client.
I didn’t want to go somewhere where I would be labeled as “mentally ill,” or broken or problematic simply because a family situation (beyond my control) had begun to negatively affect me. I wanted to then create a practice and a place that was lacking for me when I needed it. Now, this is a counseling and relationship center where high functioning clientele without mental illness can come and sort through the messiness that life and relationships can sometimes be without being labeled or diagnosed and receive help, support, strategies, and interventions that will help them create change and ultimately transform the way they live, love, work, parent and lead.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been growing pains at times when developing this business, but for the most part, people have really appreciated the type of service and experience we offer, and have been receptive to it. The biggest struggle now, is that we can’t be everywhere where people need us!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a counseling center that specializes in relationships. Most clients come to us for marriage counseling or couples counseling, but we have more and more who are coming to us for sex therapy, parenting, divorce, anxiety, and the like. What makes us proud is that we really get to help people enrich their entire quality of life when they work with us. We are self-pay, meaning we don’t get insurance companies involved in clients’ treatment. This means that just because clients come to us for relationship help and wanting to better their marriage/sex life/odds of finding a great mate, we don’t diagnose them with a mental disorder, which insurance requires for reimbursement purposes. We tell our clients this upfront. If they still want to use insurance, then we are happy to refer out. When clients work with us, they get to maximize their relationships, they get enhanced confidentiality and privacy, and they get the freedom and flexibility of working on the issues they feel are important, rather than being monitored by their insurance provider. We feel this helps us to deliver a quality of service that is top notch and leave clients feeling top of mind and heart. We are located in a historic farmhouse, serving hot and cold beverages, and snacks ranging from healthy to indulgent. Our space is warm, inviting, and makes you feel like you’re at home. We are the only relationship center in this area (Carrollton) to specifically focus on couples and relationships and each therapist is highly trained in couples work to ensure client’s really have a therapist that understands the intricacies that comes with the territory of couple’s work. At the end of the day, our therapists are likely to go home and reflect on cases, get additional training because they have that one couple in mind, research articles, and prepare homework because they love and care about their clients and are invested in providing them with the highest quality of service possible. Our therapists often feel like a “friend” and believe in practicing what they preach. This is absolutely a place that I’d feel comfortable sending my closest friends and family and trust they’ll be taken care of, respected, and treated well.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course. Lots of people need our help. We can only help so many people at one time. Cities could, however, help make citizens more aware of the resources available to them.
