Camille, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I love cupcakes and making people happy so having a cupcake shop was perfect for me! I have been a home baker for years and enjoy baking with my three daughters.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been great but as in any retail environment, staffing is a challenge. And sometimes managing customer expectations can also be challenging. People can have grand visions for a custom cake but those types of special cakes take a lot of time, skill and effort and can be expensive. Managing those expectations and communicating every step of the way is essential.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SmallCakes Cupcakery – what should we know?
We are a Cupcakery! We specialize in baking yummy cupcakes and cookie sandwiches fresh every single day! We also cater events and bake specialty cakes. What sets us apart is that we bake fresh every morning and we use high quality, seasonal ingredients. I am proud of the high standards we have and love all the amazing Smallcakes recipes that are delicious, moist and appetizing.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I could not do this without the support of my wonderful husband. And, we have been fortunate to have really talented bakers and customer service personnel work with us along the way. My three daughters are the best cheerleaders ever, though! They love to be in the store and actually help customers. One day, my youngest daughter decided she wanted to vacuum the floors! Being in the store is teaching them all about business, cash flow, customer service and more. It’s been a really fun learning journey for all of us.
