Meet Lauren Carey of Peachtree Road Farmers Market in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Carey.

Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have an event planning and nonprofit management background plus a love of local food. These passions came together in Sept 2009 when I was hired as the Executive Director of Peachtree Road Farmers Market at The Cathedral of St. Philip.

The Cathedral of St. Philip leadership feels strongly about serving and building community, so much so they made the farmers market a part of their work. Each Saturday, April- December you can enjoy a direct relationship with local farmers and producers as you get to know your neighbors.

Over the last 9 years, the market has grown from 20 vendors to 78. We have expanded our service programs and become a destination for Atlantans.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Growing in a community requires grace and communication from all parties. As the market became more sophisticated we needed to require more from out vendors – insurance, certifications, inspections and use of local products. This integrated approach where the prepared food vendors use seasonal ingredients by the farmers has been the best and most challenging goal.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Peachtree Road Farmers Market story. Tell us more about the business.
We are proud to connect local certified organic and Certified naturally grown farmers directly to consumers.

Locally grown produce has higher nutrient values and tastes better than broccoli that has spent two weeks on a truck, box, shelf.

We are Atlanta’s largest producer only market. Fresh, heirloom varieties raised with love helps us continue to be the best in Atlanta.
