Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirae Gibson.
Hi Desirae, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Dezi, Photographer and owner of ExposeHER Photos! (@RevealingYourLight). I have loved photography since I was a young child. When I was in high school, photography was just a way to have access to a camera, go to all the sporting events for free, and take pictures of my friends and myself for our school’s yearbook and newspaper!
By my senior year, I knew that I wanted to pursue photography as a career. However, God’s plan for us isn’t always our own! (Jeremiah 29:11) So 2 degrees and one daughter later, in the midst of a global pandemic, my dreams are finally becoming my reality. I officially launched my business on January 1, 2021.
But the truth is, watching others believe in themselves is what motivates me to want to capture those moments. It allows me to believe in myself when it comes to photography! So it doesn’t matter if you love to sing, dance, model, or teach youth… let the world see your light! Even if you aren’t the best, being consistent allows the light inside of you to shine bright enough that you inspire others!
Today I am trusting God with my business and everything I do. My long-term goal is to begin shooting more lifestyle, brand, and wedding photography.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t. During college, when I wanted to start photography, I worked three jobs while going to pay for school and didnt have money for proper equipment. I became homeless and was staying with friends until I graduated undergrad.
Once I graduated, I had my daughter and became a single mom when I was six months pregnant. It was hard learning to co-parent but this is what pushed me to really pursue my photography and go to grad school. While doing photography on the side, I was working a full-time job in grad school at LSU and being a single mom.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do photography, I specialize in lifestyle and brand photography. I am known for ensuring my clients have #AuthenticExperiences and #ReavlingTheirLight during each session. I’m proud that I’m able to balance being a mom and was able to achieve a 4.0 GPA and still have my photography business. I think what sets me apart is that I’m a Christian entrepreneur who has been through so much but still don’t allow me to fall short for accomplishing my goals.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see more black creatives being noticed for their work and getting contracts with bigger companies.
