Hidden Gems: Meet Jay Redd of Figured Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Redd.

Hi Jay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been the type of person to uplift and help people feel good about themselves. I constantly find myself complimenting someone or giving out stylish suggestions of what I felt like would give that person a boost of confidence. I am a true believer of “When you look good… You FEEL good,” and I love helping people feel good about themselves.

Growing up, I would customize my clothes. I would cut, glue, add things, take away things, and tie stuff up to make something completely different. Lol, my mom uses to joke and tell me, “girl, you done cut up allll your stuff, after a while you won’t have anything left to wear”!!! Needless to say, I didn’t care! I was focused on creating and that was my birth of fashion.

Figured Boutique LLC manifested from a dream I had one night. I saw myself in a well-decorated boutique with multiple styles hanging on racks, black carpet, red walls, and chandelier lights hanging from the ceiling. I wasn’t a shopper in this boutique, I was the owner and it just felt right! I didn’t act on it immediately. I just thought it was a regular dream and I went on with my everyday life but the thought of the dream wouldn’t leave my head! It kinda felt like I was being haunted over and over by this dream. I finally told my friend and my partner about the dream I had and thoughts of starting my own boutique and they were like, “YES! This is something you should be doing”! Shortly after that, I launched Figured Boutique LLC!!!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whew! I can honestly say starting and running your own business is not easy! Aside from becoming registered with the state, you must become educated with marketing, social media hacks, networking, finding the right vendors and staying focused on the next best thing for your business to stay afloat with profits and investments. It’s literally something you must be obsessed with to become successful and sustain.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The goal of Figured Boutique is to cater to people of all sizes; however majority of the styles we have available are for sizes (12-24) which to me is considered average but in society, those sizes would be considered as “PLUS.”

As a tall woman of my size, it would be a challenge to find clothes that would fit and compliment my figure. So, I wanted to create a space where the “realistic average” size person could find unique pieces. I take pride in catering to the community of curvy, “thick,” tall, and plus sizes. I definitely feel companies don’t show enough to love us and society will push the stigma that “smaller is better,” which isn’t fair! Everyone has the right to feel good in their own skin and to have representation in fashion and that’s what keeps me going!
