Hidden Gems: Meet Austin Miles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Miles.

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Austin Miles and I’m a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper. I’ve loved fashion for my whole life so it’s no coincidence that I’ve ended up where I am in life, but if you would’ve told me I’d be where I am now 2 years ago I wouldn’t have believed it. As a child, my mother would drag me along to her mall trips every weekend, and that made me have an appreciation for clothes from a young age, but for whatever reason, I never considered a career in fashion. After the first semester of my sophomore year at Georgia State, I decided I wanted to transfer to Georgia Southern. A couple of days before I was set to move to Statesboro, one of my friends asked me to style him and It went really well. Ever since then, I’ve been a freelance wardrobe stylist and personal shopper, and since graduation, I’ve been working as a stylist at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a stylist just came to me and wasn’t something that I ever went back on after I had my mind set. I’ve learned a lot of lessons about fashion and how all people see it differently once I started styling. It’s helped me grow in so many ways because now when I’m styling a client I think much differently than I did before. When it comes to styling its all about collaboration to make sure that me end the client get the desired outcome for whatever the look is for. It definitely wasn’t easy figuring out what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. I went back and forth so many times on different career paths and always felt like I was forcing myself to pick something that I didn’t actually love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I pride myself on being a jack of all trades. I style clients from head to toe for events, I go and shop for clients if they’re just looking for the perfect shoe to go with an outfit or the perfect new bag, I have designed custom garments for clients, I am able to tailor clothes, I sell jewelry, etc.. I want my clients to know they can come to me for any and everything fashion-related and that I’m here to help. I’m definitely most proud of being able to wake up every morning doing what I love. I don’t take it for granted and hope I can always do this.

What were you like growing up?
I was honestly a good kid growing up. I lived in a neighborhood where I had a lot of friends so I was always playing with them. In regards to school, I always did my work and got good grades so i was never putting my parents through too much. I was definitely more introverted than I am today, but if you got to know me, I was goofy. My career interests bounced between something in the medical field and criminal justice but I was always interested in fashion even though it wasn’t career-wise.
