Conversations with Kaliah (Kayla) Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaliah Robinson.

Hi Kaliah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started getting into a lot of trouble in my teen years, which led to me being put into a juvenile detention center for the beginning of my high school senior year. Once I got out and realized I didn’t want to continue to head down the path that I was headed in, I decided to enroll in college at Alabama A&M University. One of my teachers that I looked up to in high school went to A&M and always spoke highly of it and I was like wow, that school is for me. Around the time that I enrolled, my twin brother and his wife at the time were selected to be on a reality tv show. I guess you can say that I got my 15 minutes of fame from that reality show. However, it went very badly for my family because that’s when reality TV started getting popular, and we didn’t realize just how scripted it was going to be.

We got a lot of backlash from the airing of our episode, and that is when I got my first taste of cyberbullying. The entire situation made me never want to participate in reality tv again. I received a lot of harassment and negative comments and/or opinions from social media users. Defending myself didn’t help the situation. The entire ordeal really lowered my self-confidence and for a period of time, and I found it hard to speak up for myself. The episode sort of made a name for me around school, and one day while on campus, I met these two guys who were known for throwing college parties, and I began to pass out flyers for them. I did that for a year they promoted me to be their Event administer (door worker) for the parties. I guess you can say that’s how the Trapgirl in me got started.

I love parties and I love making money and back then I worked a lot of different parties because I would always meet people while I was out and they would want me to work. A lot of the time, people would call on the day of the event and just tell me where they needed me, and I always went because I love making money, and it made it even better that I got to make my money in an environment that I wanted to be in. I ended up doing this all through college. I graduated college with my bachelor’s in Human Development and Family studies a year after I gave birth to my son. Two years after having him, I went back to school to begin working on my Master’s degree. During this time, I linked up with a girl that I knew from throwing parties back in the day. We started our first successful business called Paint2Trap. They were paint parties with music and drinks and they got to be very popular in our city. We still do Paint2Trap from time to time, but lately, we’ve been on our own business ventures. Within the last year, I began getting into more modeling and I started an online boutique called the Trapgirl Collection.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road at all. From being in the detention center, I realized early on that I had two choices, keep doing what I was doing and end up in jail or do what I needed to do and better myself. I got my life together, but it wasn’t easy. I put myself through college twice and graduated, but in the midst of doing that, I had a very devastating break up with my sons’ father. one of reasoning for going back to college was to keep myself busy instead of focusing on what could have been with my son’s dad. I figured by the time I graduated, I’d be fully over it.

The other reasoning is that I wanted a secure a second degree to have something to full back on just in case this entrepreneur thing doesn’t work out. Anywho, I stayed in that relationship way too long trying to make something work that just ultimately was ever going to. It was really hard for me but in the end, it made me go harder because now it was just my child and me. I have gone through the same struggles that all single mothers go through, of course, financial problems and things like that. I had to get and figure out everything on my own because I learned early on that the only person you can truly depend on is yourself. I have had people help me, only to just throw it back in my face later, and that is not a feeling I want to feel again.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As of right now, I am a community service specialist. I work for an organization that helps people with little to no income pay their utility bills, and I love my job. It gets stressful at times as any other job does, but I love what I do, and helping people is something I am very passionate about. I still work the door at local clubs in the area. I’ve been doing that for the past ten years since college. I’ve also been blessed to take my skills to other neighboring cities such as Atlanta and Miami, working the door at local clubs, mansions, and pool parties with the same two guys introduced early on in my story.

What sets me apart from everyone else is that I always accomplish my goals I had a goal of graduating with my Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies by the age of 30, and I recently graduated with my master’s degree on my 30th birthday which was April 30. I’m most proud of myself because I realize that I am a go-getter. Nothing is impossible. I’m very good with slogans I have great business ideas and I believe that sets me apart from everybody else.

What’s next?
My future plans for right now are just to continue to grow my business. I realize that I would like for my boutique to be more of a brand, so I’m working on moving towards that. Im also working on a new business venture. I don’t want to give too many details away just yet because this is new and I just wanna make sure everything goes well and flows before I announce. I plan to continue just to become the entrepreneur mogul that I’ve always wanted to be.
