Today we’d like to introduce you to Tishida Smith.
Tishida, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been teaching high school math since 2014. I have taught both Algebra, Geometry, Honors Geometry, and SAT Math Prep over the years. I have a bachelor of science in Mathematics, a Masters of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, and an Educational Specialist in instructional technology.
I decided to start my small business, “Math Wiz on the GO,” during the pandemic (March 2020). I knew several students across the world may be struggling with adjusting to virtual learning and grasping the math skills needed to be successful. In my opinion, math is a very challenging subject, and teaching and learning mathematics online can be difficult within itself. Not every student can catch on as quickly as others. Therefore, I thought provided students with additional assistance and resources outside of what they received from their teachers virtually would be beneficial.
Currently, I am servicing grades 3 – 12 as well as college-level course and test prep (SAT, ACT, Milestones, EOG, and more). My services are offered in a virtual format to protect the safety of both myself and my customers. I currently still teach 9th and 10th-grade math. Therefore my availability is after school and on Saturdays. Though Math Wiz on the GO is still a small, growing business, I look forward to seeing where it will go in the future.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Some of the challenges I faced while starting my business was getting myself out there. Like most other successful businesses, promotion is key.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a high school mathematics teacher and tutor. I specialize in Algebra and Geometry, but I am well equipped in all areas of mathematics. I am known for my creativity in the classroom and my dedication to speaking out and going against the odds for the good of my students.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my childhood memories was when an elementary teacher told me that she did not know what, but she saw me doing amazing things with mathematics. I have always had a passion for math and learning as a child.
