Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Sweeney.
Keith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started music at the age of 17. My father was a guitar player from Jamaica, and my Mother was Native and Black Canadian. I was mentored by Spice of Platinum dreams, as well as Dave Reid. As I continued to grow in my music, I traveled a lot to build my network and life experience, giving me a deeper knowledge of things and experiences that I could talk about in my music.
Later in my career, I started working with my producer, Da6ix, who really helped me to hone in and develop my sound, which I like to call Motivational Party Trap music. Building relationships with Bonnie Godiva and Mic Handz really opened up a new world in music, having great people not only guiding me but creating opportunities for me to flourish. As an artist, my favorite part became touring. I have toured across most of the US, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. In the last two years, I created an artist development company called BTP ENT, which I use to develop artists, organize events, and set up tours.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As an artist, the path is never smooth. Our success comes from how we manage the bumps in the road. Some of those struggles include dealing with promoters that don’t want to pay you for your work. Other artists are trying to use you and the opportunities that you have created to make themselves look like they are doing more. And really the big one, people forgetting that this artistry is a business, too many want you to do everything free. The other huge obstacle is not having the finances to do full marketing and promo campaigns, being able to service your singles to radio, and having the budget to finance celebrity features and big-budget music videos. But no matter what, I keep pushing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Hip Hop Artist from Toronto, Canada. I specialize in Hip Hop music and artist development. I am most known for touring regularly and developing up-and-coming artists. I have had the opportunity to work with artists from Poland, Toronto, Atlanta, Florida, Montreal, St Maarten, Jamaica, and a few other places. I am most proud of being able to see some of the artists I have worked with using what I have taught them to build their careers.
