Conversations with Dawn Todman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Todman.

Hi Dawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Native of the United States Virgin Islands, I relocated to Atlanta in 2017 on a mercy flight with my two children after the two CAT 5 storms (Irma & Maria) devastated our islands. My husband was stationed overseas and unable to be there for the initial move. It’s interesting because we’d always intended to relocate, but the circumstances forced it to occur a little sooner. It had always been my dream to open a restaurant. Food has always been my passion. I love creating something that makes others happy! It’s also an outlet for me. I started ESSENCE OF CREAM with my cheesecakes and branched out into catering. I don’t like to categorize my cuisine because I pull from Italian, American, Asian and fuse them with my Caribbean roots.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming an entrepreneur has not and in my honest opinion, will never be easy. But I wouldn’t change anything I’ve encountered. My husband is my biggest supporter. My mom and sister as well. They all push me to become better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a licensed / insured and aServeSafe mgr Caterer. 2018 Auguste Escoffier Culinary Graduate American Culinary Federation Member. I curate menus after sitting and getting to know my clients. I take the time to learn more than just the basics. It helps when you can utilize that to enhance the overall experience.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was very independent-minded, to say the least. I was rebellious as a teen. But I thank God for growth!
