Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Sanchez.
Hey, my name is Kat, and I’m 30 years old! I’m married to the love of my life, Arjun. He is Indian and I am Peruvian. We have two precious kids, Emma (8y) and Milo (8 months). When people ask me about my story, I really don’t know where to start because it is long! haha. Me, my parents and siblings moved from Peru eight years ago. The process for our residency took so long that when we actually got approved it was the most unexpected news ever! Both of my parents had very stable jobs in peru.
My sister had just started college, and I had my baby Emma only six months before we got approved so yea leaving our country and our family was a very hard decisions to make! This opportunity was for my father and “his family” which did not include my little girl, so I had to do the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, which was to move here and leave Emma in Peru for 18 months until her residency was approved. She stayed with my Aunt Lola in our home and moved to the US with me as soon as she got her paperwork approved. Well, my story in the beauty industry started almost three years ago when I started getting my lashes done. I fell in love with everything that had to do with it and how it made me feel so pretty and confident, and I wanted to do that for girls!
I decided to take a class soon after and started lashing in our small apartment. I had only a lash bed and a little cart organizer there. My living room did not have space for anything else. I was still working part-time as a server, so I wasn’t able to take as many clients. But after I started getting busy, I had to leave my serving job and decided to lash full time. Me and my husband bought a house last year, and I was lashing from there and getting everything ready to open a salon, but covid hit, so I decided to put that on hold. After a few weeks of covid craziness, I found out we were pregnant with our baby milo and I had just enrolled in esthetician school so yea, last year was hectic. I finished esthetician school this June and decided to open a salon with two partners, which are my sister and best friend. We are so happy to finally have a spot and my heart is full with all the new clients I’ve been able to meet through the salon. When I look back, I can not believe how far I’ve come. From working from our tiny apartment to opening a salon… and this is just the beginning.
Life is hectic now, for sure! Working full-time on your business and learning how to balance your personal life with it is not easy, but I will never stop trying to do my best at both. When you are obsessed with what you do you’ll do the impossible to make it work.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It honestly has not been easy. A lot of hard work, this industry is so competitive and you learn something new everyday for sure. You can only learn so much in the class you take to become a “lash tech” and If you don’t keep educating yourself, you won’t succeed. You need to work hard for your clients so they come back and get those lashes done again, I have clients that have been coming to me since the very beginning, three years ago, and I’m so thankful for them! My struggles along the way were trying to balance my life as a mom and wife with my job. I’m thankful I have my mom’s help full time because I honestly don’t know what I would do without her. Second, to accept and learn that even when you try your best, you can not make absolutely everyone happy and that’s okay!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a licensed esthetician that offers lash and brow services. I specialize in lash extensions, it’s my most popular service. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come from working at home to opening my own salon. My main goal, besides offering the best experience along with the best products in the market, is to educate clients. I want them to know everything about my services, aftercare, etc.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Love the life you live and live the life you love! Never give up if you love what you do, keep trying. When it comes to lash, extensions is all about practice. Practice, practice! I see my work from three years ago and I’m amazed of how much I have learned how I have my own technique and it’s all about time, patience and practice! So if you feel it’s too hard and you can’t do it. don’t give up! just keep trying I promise it gets easier/better.
