Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ SB

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ SB.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, it really all started when I asked my dad for piano lessons when I was 12/13. He was like bump that I’mma show you how to make some real money. So, the following Christmas he got me, my first controller. It was like a Numark mix deck 2 to be exact. I didn’t touch it for like a couple months, then one morning before school, I was downstairs in my basement and I taught myself how to mix. From that I just started learning then I had my first gig in little 5 points a year later. I still remember the place too; it was in the spot where Heet ATL is now. Then started doing little celebrities’ events from fashion shows to bowling tournaments at the age of 14, I think. Did my senior prom then went and did the damn thing at Fort Valley State. Now I’m here back in the city doing the come-up once again. Trying to become a staple in the city.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been 50-50 to be honest. It’s been pretty much a learning experience. I’ve had my high moments and my lows. Getting arrested twice in college for being a DJ was definitely one of them. Plus dealing with your mental health. I had to learn to leave my feelings and not think everybody is on your side in this business. It’s so much but hopefully I can get to tell it more in-depth on a podcast or something later down the line.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, everybody knows me for DJing or producing. It was kinda funny too cause seeing folks’ reactions when they see me in action is low-key amazing. It’s always like “bruuuhhhh you really be doing that???”. I remember I was doing this Que block party at school and this promoter who never gave me no play was like “you got better”. Then I tell him “Nah bruh, I always been like this” in most humble way I can say it. Also, one of my nicknames is Mix God Jr. I was putting out crazy mixes when I was young. Like Dj jelly/baby yu quality you know. I stepped away from it once I got in college and started doing clubs/ house parties. But been tapping back into it a lot lately. I miss creativity man.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
With being a DJ, it’s always gonna be a place for us. But you know in the past 6-7 years people been kinda downplaying us. Either it be TikTok or even us as DJs undercutting each other fees. I feel we’re gonna elevate with technology of course, but I can’t see anything major yet. Controllers were already big shift in scene. I’m just hoping I can help push the culture forward and earn the respect of the DJ back.
