Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakita Davis.
Hi Lakita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a very creative person. Growing up I found my interest in art classes at the local museums while other kids chose more traditional extracurricular activities, such as sports and dance classes. I always remember art playing a special role in my life from the very beginning. It was no question to choose Graphic Design as a study major and International Business as a minor when I was awarded an opportunity to continue my education at the Historically Black College/University, Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Although I was just starting in my field, art played a vital role in how I navigated through my undergraduate years and even afforded me many opportunities that I wouldn’t have imagined. I went on to further my education at the prestigious, Savannah College of Art and Design, here in Atlanta, Georgia, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This helped to catapult my career and gave me the opportunity to tap into more professional artistic spaces, which led to starting my own branding agency, the Brand Museum; a graphic design company committed to offering authentic designs from a unique perspective.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey becoming a graphic designer and business owner has fortunately been a smooth road, despite a few obstacles. Having worked for a startup e-commerce business to a publicly-traded billion-dollar company, I was challenged with learning how to cater to different audiences in different industries from jewelry to healthcare. During this transition, I learned to adapt and meet the client’s needs regardless of the nature of the business. This pushed me to be a better designer and take my business more seriously by learning new design programs, exploring new techniques and offering more services to my clients to better their brand. Through networking, along with the support of my friends and family, I have been given the opportunity to work with many businesses, small and large, that allowed my business to flourish over the years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Here at the Brand Museum, we aim to equip our customers with innovative solutions to catapult their businesses, products, and brands so they create value and maintain competitive advantages in their respective industries. Our mission is to provide an eclectic experience that inspires, informs, and motivates our clients to identify their brand and maximize their business through graphic design, web design, and product marketing. Being the Curator of my business, I give my clients a brand experience that makes them feel as if their work is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece and ready to be seen by the world. My clients receive a museum-like experience by preparing their brands to stand the test of time by having a purpose, mission, and values. Providing a clear vision and solid foundation and not just a pretty logo is what sets us apart from other businesses who may offer the same services but not the same experience as the Brand Museum.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Throughout my journey as a designer, I’ve learned many valuable lessons but the one that resonates the most is never being afraid to learn new skills. Being a graphic designer is an art of technology, and with technology comes updates and new programs. I’ve learned to remain humble and always willing to indulge new techniques that will expand my services.
