Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Moon.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve been creating, painting, collaging, and sculpting. My high school sponsors an artist market each spring to raise money for the art program. Student artists were encouraged to participate, so I signed up for a booth. I discovered that I really enjoyed talking to people about my work, watching them become personally connected to a piece, and selling it to them to take home to live on. I had a lot of support at the market and dozens of requests for commissions. Commissions turned into a website, the website turned into a studio, and the studio turned into a business. Currently, I am still a student at the University of Georgia studying painting and drawing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. Every artist struggles with their work from time to time. It is very difficult to be creative on a deadline or even sometimes just on a rainy day. As a young artist still in university, I am still working on finding a balance between my own personal creative vision and satisfying a customer’s (or professor’s!!) expectations. One thing I always try to remind myself when getting caught up in some of these struggles, is that the act of creating is more important than the creation itself. Focusing on this relieved a lot of pressure I was putting on my work, and reminds me to enjoy the process as much as the final work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently studying painting and drawing at UGA, specializing in mixed media paintings. My work is known for its energy and color that pulls the viewer into a world of paint, chaos, and found objects. Currently, I am painting Athens urban street scenes focusing on entryways and reflections. I have received a lot of support from local boutiques and restaurants, asking to represent my work on their walls. Becoming involved with the Athens art scene and community has been a great experience and I am most proud of the work hanging on those walls around the city. I feel like I have made my mark on Athens as an undergrad art student and I am so excited to see where life takes my art next.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
The painting I am most proud of is called “From the Center of my Life there came a Great Fountain.” This piece, covered in layers of paint, charcoal, mixed media collage, and spray-paint, is a reflection of my own spirituality and gratitude from the year of 2020. Almost a year and a half later, I finally called the piece complete and sent it off into the world.
