Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Esquivel.
Hi Nicholas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During elementary school, my mom would always give me a disposable film camera to take photos during my school field trips. When I was 13 or 14, I saw a friend taking photos on his phone and posting them on Instagram, I remember thinking to myself “wow that looks cool, I bet I can do that too” and started taking photos on my phone and posting them. I would then continue using my phone to take photos throughout middle school and high school. After I graduated high school in 2017, my dad bought me my first DSLR camera and I would take it everywhere with me, taking photos of anything I found interesting. About two months later, I signed up for a photography class down the street from my house at the community center where I wanted to get a better understanding of how to use my camera. In the spring of 2018, I signed up for a photography class for college thinking it was about digital cameras but found out on the first day of class that it was all film photography. I ended up enjoying film and stuck with it. I stayed consistent with photography, carrying a camera with me wherever I’d go the past four years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I can be hard on myself when it comes to creating photos where I’ll love how it looks and then the next day hate it. Another struggle I’ve faced is creative block, not knowing what to photograph and feeling burnt out can be the worst. However, I’ve learned on how to overcome it by taking small breaks and getting inspiration from other photographer’s work I like and look up to.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do digital and film photography. I do enjoy shooting film more just because of the slow down process when taking a photo. I guess I can say I’m known for being a photographer. All my friends and family know that I have a huge passion for it. I’m proud of all the personal goals I’ve accomplished, especially in the last couple of years. Whether it’d be taking photos for a brand, music artist, car shows as well as seeing the progress I’ve made since I started.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be hanging out with my friends as well as staying up late playing video games with them.
