Community Highlights: Meet Shanithia Kendrick of Hyquality Chicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanithia Kendrick.

Hi Shanithia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The journey to where I am now started with a passion to heal people. I originally thought the idea was to serve through advocacy work, but I soon realized I wanted to push faith more than politics. Once I realized faith would be the vehicle I would use to facilitate healing, I landed in the field of counseling. I quickly shifted from being a trusted voice of wisdom in my inner circle to a children and family therapist, where I am now. The steps in between were all about maintaining a made up mind no matter the cost.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. There has been major delays which caused deep disappointment and pushed me to quit. What helped me in those moments was remembering who I was, feeling the weight of the people who needed me, and having people around me who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Overcoming takes more than passion, desire, and willpower. All of those are rooted in feelings and feelings change. But what stands no matter what is who you say you are.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hyquality Chicks?
Hyquality Chicks is a ministry I started for the purpose of setting a new standard through conversations on faith, womanhood, and therapy. In many Christian circles, the concept of what a woman of God actually is is overshadowed by what a woman does according to cultural and societal expectations. Hyquality Chicks is designed to challenge those norms in a way that realigns women back to God’s original idea when “she” was created in Genesis 1. At the heart of this ministry is therapy. This is what I specialize in. I am most known for marrying the concepts of faith with modalities in therapy to provoke wholeness and healing. I am also known for authenticity. This is what sets me apart from everybody else. I “coined” a phrase that says, “Slay In Your Lane”. I want readers to know when they encounter my brand, they are encountering authenticity in a powerful way that will unlock that same power within themselves.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Wow! What an incredible question. I have so many of each and I can’t share them all, but I can share my top three. One of my favorite apps is an app called Libby. It is owned by another app called Overdrive. This is my favorite app to use to borrow free ebooks from my local library. It is easy to use and doesn’t require another app to read. You can read your books directly from the app. The second resource I would recommend is a podcast called Krew Season. It is a dope podcast hosted by a group of black men from Houston. It is comical, real, authentic, and challenging in all the best ways. Give it a listen. The last resource I will offer is another app I use daily. It is a part of my self-care routine and helps me to clear my mind. It is called Jigsaw Puzzles. It’s something about finding each piece and hearing the satisfying sound of it popping into place that relaxes me between sessions.
