Hi Angela U., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hi there! My name is Angela and I started my company, Totally Unique Cakes, in 2004. A dear friend of mine asked me to do a cake for her daughter’s 2nd birthday party and served the cake at our church. From that one cake, people began to recommend Totally Unique Cakes for all of their occasions. Through mostly word-of-mouth marketing, we have been able to create custom cakes for many events all over Atlanta and surrounding areas. We have even delivered as far as Chicago, IL, Birmingham, AL, Philadelphia, PA, Minneapolis, MN, Baltimore, MD and Charlotte, NC.
My mother is a master cake decorator. It started out as a hobby for her until she retired from the military and turned it into a business. I remember being about 13 or 14 years old when I started doing small tasks for the business – taking orders, making frosting, folding boxes, and assisting with deliveries – all the while watching in the background as my mother would create some of the most beautiful cakes. One particular day, we had 3 wedding cakes going out and got behind schedule. My mother gave me a bag of frosting and quickly showed me how to do the basket weaving technique. I thought I was only going to do one tier, but ended up doing the entire cake by myself. From that day on, cake decorating has been a passion of mine.
Totally Unique Cakes has been fortunate enough to create custom cakes for several celebrities, including Lisa Wu, NeNe Leakes, Cynthia Bailey, Stephen A. Smith, K. Michelle, Jonathan McReynolds, PJ Morton, Danielle Brooks, and several others.
We have also had our cakes appear on the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Season 1) and “Who’s Wedding Is It Anyway?”
Totally Unique Cakes creates custom cakes for all occasions and strives to create “cakes that taste as good as they look!”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. I had to learn quickly that time management would help me be the most successful at balancing my career and growing business. Even though I have had to do most of the work by myself, I had to learn that it is okay to ask for help when you need it. My best friends have had to frost cupcakes, fold boxes, or even help out with deliveries.
Most recently, like many other business in this industry, we struggled with fulfilling orders as supplies were low or even out of stock due to the shortages around the country caused by the COVID19 pandemic.

Totally Unique Cakes offers specialty and custom cake designs for birthdays, weddings and other special occasions. We are known for our great tasting cakes and beautiful designs. We are most proud of our repeat customers allowing us the opportunity to share in the special moments. For many families, we have created cakes for all of their occasions such as their bridal shower, wedding, anniversaries, baby showers and every birthday celebration. Our clients know that they can trust us to provide exemplary service and delicious cakes.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Social media has given me access to many different cake designers and vendors that several years ago was unheard of! YouTube videos and tutorials are extremely helpful for new techniques and ideas. Also, attending cake conferences and connecting with peer groups on social media have been extremely helpful.
